Switch gear stopped working when bike is running

Hi my 2004 r1200gs switch gear only works when the bike is no running as soon as you start the bike the switch gear stops working . I.E if you place the indicator on the left side and then start the bike it wont switch off you need to turn the ignition off completely to turn it off. Every thing works when the bike is not running but ignition switched on but as soon as you fire up it stops.

All sound very odd, I would remove battery terminals scrape clean the posts and connections, and refit with a smear a Vaseline.
Only refit the main terminals not a tower of three or four other things like comms sat nav etc.
Then think about speaking to BMW if that doesn't sort it

the canbus system can be troublesome if your charging voltage is low/high, as the man says check battery connections and then meter the voltage when engine running, I have heard of nadgered alternators on cars giving our 'dirty' DC and interfering with engine systems as well, you could try running engine with the alt belt off - long shot but maybe worth it if you run out of ideas

Hi it could be I did check the voltage when it was running it was 14.4 volts I will check it again, thanks
 
No joy the output is right at the battery and today I discovered that if you even try to start the bike it stops the switch gear working. So with the bike ignition turn on and touch the starter button and it turns over without starting it stops the switch gear.

My 06 gave the occasional problem with individual switches - your prob seems to be all switches at the same time.
As you are asking the questions you may not be the most experienced, however close visual check on all cable routes emanating (spellcheck says inseminating!) from the switchgear, esp the known SSttretch problem for loom wires around the headstock - Ah, try turning wheel left or right the try switches again.
And then think about getting it in to your friendly GS911 owner nearby, then in to you nearest dealer, wherever that might be.

Hi thanks I have looked at the cable routing but I cant see chaffing on the loom and I have tried turning it side to side and taking the battery off and leaving it for a while but ever system works fine until you start it. I had for got to say this bike has recently had a new abs pump fitted but it is work fine no issues with this at all the bike runs fine brake lights work but as I have said the switch gear is the only issue.
 
Seems like pressing the start button makes a relay somewhere change polarity killing your indicator circuit. If you don't have a Haines Manuel would be worth getting one as it will have wiring schematic drawings which will allow you to check what goes where when switches are made.
Could save you a few quid if you can diagnose yourself!
 
I had a quick look at my Haines Manuel and from what I can see the central electrics unit that controls the indicator functions may need reprogrammed at the dealers :-(

It's basically a programmable logic controller (PLC) which is basically a programmable relay (very clever) anyway the only way I can see why this would work in the off position and once the start button is pushed doesn't work is if the programming has become altered somehow. Has it been plugged in to a diagnostic recently? If so my guess is that's your problem mate.

When it does work is the key in the first possition in the ignition eg one turn round to the right?
 
Hi it not been plugged in recently , when it does decide to work in the past it was running then it just started working when I was driving it or it had been warmed up , but it has stopped working altogether now.

If this is the case then a connection is loose somewhere
Annoying I know but you may have to just work your way round it checking tightness of connections.
 
Have a look at the following screen-shots.

Perhaps the connectors in you 'multifunction switch' are loose/faulty..? Should be easy enought check that.

Hi I have tried looking at the connectors all look good, the next move is to get it plugged in to a GS911
 
Got plugged in to a gs911 and fault code 41758 (kl30) battery positive over charge.

Have you put a multimeter across the battery when the bike is running?
A battery will only draw the current it needs to charge so it sounds then that your alternator may be producing more than 14.4v
Ill have a think and get back to you.
 
No its is only 14.Volts when you rev it and doesn't go near 14.4 v
 
Hi the gs911 is saying that the bike is reading that the battery has 18+ volts when it has only 12.64volts alternator is charging at 13.7volts when the bike is running.

Have you got another battery you could use just to rule it out....Could very well be the battery that's faulty

As long as its a 12v battery and equal or bigger than what you have just now just to test.
 
If your 2004 bike is on its original battery I'm pretty sure that will be your problem PJS
If on starting your ECU detects that the indicator circuit is using 18v to draw its current it will shut itself off to prevent damage.
A battery on its way out can do strange things like this.
 
The GS 911 can test the alternator charging voltage and plot it to a graph, if its outputting 18v it could be the rectifier at fault overcharging the battery and the canbus is shutting down protect the bikes electronics.

If its a intermittent spike of 18v you should be able to see it on the 911 graph if you set a fast refresh rate.

The bike is showing the error code so something is wrong a multi meter across the battery might not respond fast enough to show if there is a spike
