Switched power source for Garmin

I have a 2024 G 310Gs and want to fit my Garmin XT....I could connect direct to the battery, but prefer a switched power supply...the question is where do I find a switched power supply source on the bike, is there a plug/socket ? also is there a recommended connection lead

Any advice would be appreciated..thanks in advance

Hi and Welcome.
My 2018 has two connection points - from memory one on the left frame under your leg, and the second intended for the GPS is hiding front left., both well wrapped.
You will probably need to fully undress (the bike...) in order to find them.
Suggest you look in the Manual which shows little pictures (well mine does...)

Hiya, and thank you for your reply and advice, which is much appreciated

I haven't yet found any reference in the handbook, but I will research a little further

It seems that a number of manufacturers make access to accessory power sources difficult ... I've never been sure why this is so :confused:
 
On the LH side of the headlight unit, under the plastic of course :rolleyes:, are two switched power sockets. Many people over on a G310GS forum say that you can access them by just removing the headlight(1 bolt either side and 2 underneath). It will need some wiggling toget the headlight out. I did this but still couldn't get to the power sockets.
The one mentioned in an above post is supposed to be on right next to the LH side frame, near the ABS pump, under the seat.

Me - I had a fused power relay unit spare, the switching power for it was taken from the accesories fuse in the bikes fuse block. It feeds the heated grips and the sat nav via seperated fused lines.

Excellent information guys, thank you....that will help me to explore further

TBH i'm not very good when it comes to removing things like the headlight / panels so I'll likely stay clear of those areas

I had seen the Healtech device before and that remains an option, ....feeding the power leads through to an 'above instrument' bracket will still be difficult without removing panels as there is little or no room below the tank

Once again thanks to all for he replies/advice

I have now managed to power my Garmin XT directly from the battery (permanent live) which is fine , I won't forget to turn off the Sat Nav when it's not in use (y)

Finding a way through from the battery to the front of the bike without removing panels was tricky, I managed eventually !

I'm just waiting for an above the instrument mounting to arrive from AliExpress so the device can be mounted behind the Puig screen that I fitted

All I need now is for the relentless rain to stop and I'll be able to get out and about :thumb
 
The XT power supply draws power all the time as it is a 12v to 5v converter in the small rectaguar box. So it will flatten the battery eventually.
I pulled the headlight out to get at one of the sockets, they are clipped up out of the way so difficult to free off.
There are 2 on the left side of the headlight cover.
The confusion could be that the G310R has one in the headlight cover and one behind the left hand small panel below the seat. (My wife has a 310R). Also it does seem different on newer bikes(ours are both 2024)
The other option is you can get an accessory cable that plugs in instead of the fuse for the aux supply. I've got one of these to power DRL's

I actually remove the device from its cradle when not in use so no chance of any discharge

Yes but the small rectangular box is always powered and taking a trickle of power from battery as the circuit is always live ready to supply power to the cradle even if your XT isn't attached.
It might very a very small amount, (I have never measured what current it draws on standby), but it will not be zero.
 
Understood Mark and thanks again for your patience (I'm a self confessed electrical numpty)

It may be worth my while to purchase and install a Healltech device which, if I understand correctly, will restrict power discharge

BTW its still chucking it down here in Cumbria so not ideal for motorcycling at the moment

Reading the instructions the Oxford product needs a switched live to enable the outputs, the Thunderbox does not. So if you can find an easy switched live to tap into it would be a cheaper alternative. Going from your previous comments, that the Thunderbox only needs to be connected to the battery, seems to be a real positive (pun intended).

I'm now thinking that the Healtech will be a better option for me with its simple installation and easy use for a number of attachments ....bit of a bugger that its so expensive tho' ( I'm a tight Yorkshireman, short arms and deep pockets ) :thumby:
 
Cheapest if you don't want to dig into headlight is to get Mini Fuse Tap Wire.
Remove fuse for aux supply from fuse box under seat, plug in the tap, add fuse back to the new holder and add second fuse for the tap wire. Then just wire positive supply for XT to the connector.1000050981.jpg
