If you're feeling lazy, Jesse have already gone part of the way with a mounting plate in place of the pillion seat. Its $100 and looks as though it could be cut down so the luggage rack could be fitted as well. This would then form the base of the box.

Note that if you look just underneath the top box, you'll see a black box with a key in it. This is the so-called "rear compartment" that Jesse is making for the R1200GS. It replaces the stock luggage rack. It can have either a top case or a flat rack mounted on the top of it. One can store tools, oil, tire repair kits, or whatever in it. I see it as a nice place to keep those essentials that you would otherwise always be digging past in your panniers to get to something else.

The mounting plate that goes in place of the pillion seat can also be made to accept a top case, if you want the weight lower and more forward.

This is the setup that I have ended up ordering - the rear compartment, the passenger plate, and a 35L top box. It is expected to ship today.
