sorry I am late with a small advice which just popped up in my old brain.
Before getting on to the Swedish or Finnish northern region roads get a Swed to check where they to road maintenance this year of the northern road system.
I had a internet site once but cant find it.

What they do on the roads is they strip it down to nothing and fill it up with stones approx 2" in diameter for 20-40km stretches.
It is like driving on a soft pebbel beach.
Last year I met two germans on 1400 Intruders, they where shell shocked, after that incident happened in Finland.
Choose your alternativ roads,I have done it with car\motorhome and arrived home with no exhaustgas system apart from the front pipe,on the motorhome I lost the sewage holding tank:eek: which I think was a nice present to leave after the adventure.Unfortenatly the tank was empty.

Came across this type of road repair work in northern Sweden in June 2006 but thankfully limited to 1/4 mile stretches. Not fun riding a fully loaded bike (R1200ST) across such loose rocky surfaces. The road they were repairing did really need the work as heavy lorry traffic had worn severe ruts which were full of water (did I mention the heavy rain) and the road surface was pretty slick. As the only road heading to where I wanted to be, there was not much choice of other (better) routes available. I also had a 50 mile ride in N Sweden on a graded gravel road before the tarmac started again however this was okay to ride if you stayed in the compacted track left by other vehicles.

Overall, I generally found the roads in Norway & Sweden to be well maintained and in excellent condition, and much better than some of the :monkeypiz roads in the UK.

I've not come across this in Sweden yet but have ridden mile on mile through Norwegian roadworks!
I found the Swedish Road Administration website but I couldn't find any relevant info so I sent them an email.I'm going to northern Sweden and Norway soon myself so hopefully they will reply before then.

well this year most of my time in sweden will be exploring the offroad logging roads from Arjeplog downwards ending up back in Lillehammer so some rocky mainroads might prove a relaxing restbite :D

Hopefully the government will introduce a new law banning all German campervans and caravans from Scandinavia so the rest of us can get on with our trip

.. I've been struggling to get a translation for 'belaggningsarbete' however - it's too difficult for the free translation sites!
I've just e-mailed a Swedish friend for a translation.

Will let you know when she replies. :thumb2

Just checked it, and it looks like there is road work every where (great!!!)...

Also looking at that map, there is no way to get from north to south without running into some kind of roadworks, oh well I think that is part of the charme:bounce1

Heard back, but she doesn't say what the exact translation of "beläggningsarbete" is. Sorry it's not a model answer, but this is what I got. :o

.... You are right when you say that beläggningsarbete has something to do with roadwork. It means they are mending or putting on a new asphalt surface on the roads.

according to google; "beläggningsarbete" = "coating work", word by word translation does not alway make sense....

I as Danish would translate it into "surface work", ie. redoing the surface.

Heard back, but she doesn't say what the exact translation of "beläggningsarbete" is.

Sorry it's not a model answer, but that's what I got. :o

I would not worry to much,I read the Vegmelding on road works, it dosent look to bad,and no work going on in the extrem north.
Stipping the roads for miles is only done up north, all other work sites is "normal" work no pebbels but mostely putting on new tarmac.
Will slow you down a little and you might have to wait 10-20min if only one lane is open where they work.

Thanks for the add to the internet site.
Even if I speak the language(similar to norwegian)i could not find it,because the writing is different.
