The gearbox on my R80gs has due an overhaul. One of the options I am considering is fitting a taller 5th gear such as one like this:

Does anyone have any experience of fitting one of these to their airhead? I am not sure how much difference one would make. I like the sound of the idea of using less revs on longer journeys, but 145 euros is a lot for something that might not any appreciable difference.

What are peoples thoughts on this mod?

cheers

Far as I recall it givesa 5% reduction in revs per mph, thats 52.5mph after your 140 euros instead of 50mph before !
If you have already wasted all the money you want on women and beer I should go for it !!

Does that equate to a 5% reduction in fuel consumption then ? At £1.11p a litre, might be almost a good idea !
I was going to put this mod in my gearbox whilst it was out last summer, but at £150 for one cog, I declined. That was the price at the time -

Lilith has the low 1st and high 5th HPN gears, gets more milage than I do on the motoway/A roads.
Love's low 1st the GS more rideable offroad at very lowspeed.

possibly

thanks for all the comments, actually I am feeling a little flush this month so a bit of bling might be called for. Hold on no one will actually see this..

Personally I have found 5th to be slightly low and I always feel like I am over revving the engine at motorway speeds. I'll probably take the plunge, if I do I post my thoughts on here.

cheers

If / when I get my 100 box overhauled I'd add the taller gear, till then I can live with reving its guts out and little difference between 4th and 5th.

Regarding the lots of motorway miles comments.......erm,it ain`t the bike for that,is it ?

In fact, motorways should be seen as anathema to a bike rider anyway, but if you are a perpetual motorway dweller p`raps it`s time for a different bike?

Regarding the gearing issue....can`t you fit a 33/11 bevel box instead of the 37/11 ??
Or was that only possible on the twin shock Beemers?

Motorways are a necessity to get to a destination say Morocco our round trip mileage was 3900 miles and that was with a ferry from Portsmouth (300m from home return Motorways all the way) to Bilbao travailing across Spain. although it's not just Motorways it's good for A roads.

The bevel box could be the answer if you don't intend to ride off road, or very occasional as at slow speed you could end up slipping the clutch. Shale roads and gravel it’ll be fine. But then in the mountains down hill you will be relying on the brakes not the low gears to slow down.:D

It's definitely possible on the twin shocks, I've just switched the one on the cafe racer project from 33/11 to 37/11 by getting a rear bevel from a suitable bike.

Only thing with changing the bevel box is you'll need to change the speedo as well.

hi
i have got the taller 5th gear fitted to my r100gs and it has made loads of difference to the rev range to my bike as the rev sit lower now so it goes better on the motorway
its a 4500 at 70 and 4000 at 60 so the engine sounds alot better and goes well
so if u are going to use the bike on the motorways and at higher speeds it be worth it
