Ok - numptie question coming up....

I've never used a tank bag before and I bought a good as new Hein Gericke Tuareg bag last year from here. With a decent trip coming up, I just got round to fitting it last night. It uses a harness which straps to the tank (1100, plastic tank) and the bag zips onto it.

However, even with the harness as far back as it'll go (while allowing me to get the filler cap open) the bars contact the front of the bag before full lock - I do have risers fitted.

Is this normal for tank bags and something you live with, or is mine just incompatible with my setup?

From memory I think my BMW tank bag also does this. But how often do you need full lock, except for when you engage the steering lock:nenau

My thoughts too - I ask the question just in case there was some "are you mad?! - you'll die!" no-no I hadn't thought of :D

Only problem I can see is the bag will prevent you getting into a FULL tankslap :D

My Baglux gets in the way too. It's also very good turning at sounding the horn at full left lock - inevitably this is always the sort of thing that happens at 1 in the morning as you arrive home and are just wheeling the bike round on the driveway :blast

I think they all get in the way so I leave then slightly loose so you can easily "nudge" them over with the bars if necessary. Bit of loose sideways movement...

Good idea, but being a plastic tank harness, the front strap passes under the headstock and is a pig to get to - would make refuelling a right pain with lost strap ends etc

In that case, I would get some extra webbing and make 2 straps that go around the tank, (so they stay on the tank with or without the bag) with 4 clips to secure the bag to the straps. Although that will make it easy to remove, it will also make it easy to steal. :blast

I did something similar with a set of small bags that sit either side of my tank. The harness stays in place, but the bags can be removed separately.

like hitting the horn button on full left lock,
hitting the starter button  on full right is memorable.
dont worry - you only do it once.. or twice, while the engines still running of course :blast before it's indelible in your mind.
otherwise - i've had no problems with tank bags. :thumb2

Tank bags

On the bagsters thy unclip at the back and are swiveled forward to clear the filler always works bit of a pain but it does. Can you sort something like that?

genuine bmw bag any use to you (narrower than others so no bar fouling I think) ? It deffo fits over the fuel filler though (altho should be easy to remove to fill up) Smallish compared to some other bags, especially when the large waterproof cover is stored in it.

do you have the velcro bit on your tank near the seat?

I haven't got round to fashioning a proper clip to fit over the seat end of the tank lip on mine (IYSWIM)

You could borrow it if you'd rather not buy if you like - I won't be using it for a while ... :blast Where in Cheshire are you?

Thanks for the kind offer Ronnie but I think I'll persevere with the one I've got. It's a shame that it clashes slightly with the bars because it's well made and has a good harness arrangement. I'm going to go for a spin this weekend before our trip and if I get on with it ok, I'll use it if not I'll do without (it's only four days but two up, so the extra space will be handy).

When I get time, I'm going to fit a new steel tank I bought (waiting for some parts) which will open up a whole new bunch of possibilities :)

O.E bmw tankbag fits with no fouling but covers the filler cap, but just unzips at the bottom and lifts forward for fuelling dead simple.

I remember a Bike magazine story of a trip to the Bol. They were in a village at night looking for a hotel and the rider was needing to pull a u turn. Left hand U set off the horn to big embarassment, so right hand U was tried which hit the kill switch and he fell off:augie:D
