Tank/seat gap

I complained to my supplying dealer (Rainbow) that there is a large gap on the right hand side where the seat meets the plastic tank cover tank. I was told with some sympathy that they all do that sir and that it was within tolerances although they did try different seats for me with no change. Whilst at Jefferies this weekend, they have about 20 new GSes for March 1 and yes, they are all like that.

Should'nt happen on a bike of this quality and price, and it annoys me that a certain angles I can even see the battery terminals.

Eventually down to my question. I have been considering fitting a Baglux tank harness for a number of reasons. Those that have fitted one, if you have the 'gap', does the Baglux fill it?

Are you sure that you're locating the seat properly. The seat can be a little fiddly to fit correctly until you have the knack. Even the mechanics at my dealer fitted it incorrectly after a service and although it looks fitted, you end up with a slightly different gap on one side.

I agree with Dave. Mine fits perfectly and I haven't seen any others with ill fitting seats. It's possible that if it wasn't fitted correcty and has been left like it for sometime that the seat has become slightly deformed and will need to be fiddled with to get it to fit properly at first.

Thanks Dave but I thought of that. I've tried and Rainbow have tried to get rid of the gap (plus there is that long line of shinney new ones all lined up at Jefferies with exactly the same problem). Rainbow did find a second hand bike without the offending space, put the seat on my bike and there was the gap. There theory is that it isn't the seat, but the fitting of the panels. They tried loosening and re-tightening to no avail.

Ps The seat is in the low position if that makes any difference.

The gap varies in size according to the position of the height adjusters on the seat.

In the low position the gap will be smallest.

There was a thread where I read something along the lines that the underseat plastic fittings that hold the two mounting bars had been installed back to front i.e facing the wrong way, thus producinga gap. First thing when I got mine was to check that.

It might help to check, but then again I could be talking out of my exhaust.

Baglux cover and seat gap

I can't say i noticed a gap with my seat pre fitting my tank harness but i can confirm that with the tank harness fitted there is definitely no gap whatsoever, in fact the seat is an extremely snug/almost tight fit.

I've noticed that in the past but it seems to be when the seat isn't located properly. The first time was just after I had taken the tank off and I thought maybe I had located the tank too far forward. But that wasn't the case.

It happened again yesterday when I was fitting an Autocom and, yes, the gap was on the right hand side. I took the seat off and put it on again several times with the same gap.

When I refitted the seat the final time it was on the side stand and it went into place with no gap, so I'm wondering whether this only happens when I refit the seat with the bike on the centre stand...

(I have the lowered seat, so there is only one position.)

My theory is, the same employee is fitting the seats On a more serious note: When I fitted the velcro pad to the rear of the tank for the BMW tank bag, it took me an age before I could master the seat locators, due to the snug fit. More often than not, I couldn't locate the right hand side which left a gap. Unless BMW have changed the design, I'd of thought there'd be a soloution.
I use my seat in the lower position.

There's obviously a greater gap in the higher position, but, in either position, there shouldn't be an uneven gap between left and right sides.

Mike R, the best way to tackle it is.... Try to locate the front lugs first by viewing them between the seat and tank and appreciate the way they fit. Then push down at rear to locate the locking mechanism. Unfortunately and as you have mentioned, it's all to easy to get it wrong, until you have the knack. If they don't locate properly, it usually makes the seat difficult to remove because it catches on that round electrical component at the rear.

Got my new bike yesterday, and the gap is a little uneven, 6mm on the left & 10mm on the right measured at the top of the aluminium looking side panel (not the silver or matt black side panel). This is with the seat in the low position, and it is correctly located.

Usually an excuse given by a crap-ly made piece of kit which doesn't fit ...a bit like a lot of platforms.....
