Tank strip

Hi guys Tank off to paint and iv stripped the innards from the tank, couple of things i need help with,when i refit the sender unit with the new rubber seal do i need to put any sealant etc on it or just leave it dry? Do you torque down the locknuts that hold it in place or just do them tight? Got this paranoid feeling im gonna get it all back in place and my lovely Tank is gonna piss fuel everywhere, so any guys who have done this would appreciate a headsup..TIA....

I do not put any sealant and I do not torque them, I tighten the nuts by feel.

I did one recently- tighten the nuts diagonally to get it evenly pulled down in a couple of stages. They seem to reach a definite stop just as the alarm bells start ringing in ya head. Good idea to mark the tank and sender so you get the pipes sticking out in the right direction.... damhik

Cool thanks, yes took pics before the strip,theres a flat side on the sender apparently this is so when you reassemble the float is in the correct place to register the fuel amount correctly on the gauge..i think..

No need for sealant, but I do put copper slip on all the studs to make sure they don`t rust the next time I have to remove the nuts. As above, do them up by hand and "Feel" when they are tight.

Yep, don't forget the Copper Slip. Another quick tip; if you find the large 'O' ring is a bit stiff, and won't sit in the groove properly, just sit it in a bowl of warm water for five minutes. It will behave itself after that.

It is still possible to reassemble incorrectly - I managed to do it. As above, be extra careful of the tank studs - it's very very easy to snap one. Finally I've always reassembled with the filler cap on back to front - makes it much easier to fill up whilst sitting on the bike IMO. Worth considering whilst everything's in bits.
