The lining (red coating) of the tank on my R100GS has been breaking down, causing all sorts of issues.

I've filled the tank with 25l of 5% acidity white vinegar, and left it in for a week.

This softened the lining, next I dropped in 5 one foot lengths of heavy fencing chain....

I shook this around, removing more of the lining. The vinegar is now back in, for another week.

I will then repeat the chain thing... Etc.

My question is this:

When the tank is bare steel inside, can it be left in this 'raw' state.

Or must it be coated with something..?

Did some bikes with steel tanks come with them un-coated, or are they always done..?

Thanks :beerjug:

It'll never be back to bare steel :(...you'll never get rid of all the tank primer !
Just do your best then reseal with an approved tank liner/sealant ( worked great on my old series 3 landy tank :)).
There should also be an internal ( and very effective ) mesh strainer in the tank..ensure that is fitted properly.
Finally an inline filter ( buy a couple as they will clog up if your tank is that bad )....and the world will be a happier place:hogroast

A lot of my other bikes have had raw tank inners. Some of them slowly showed a little corrosion over time (never enough to be a problem), some didn't.........

Keeping the tank regularly topped and not left half empty languishing in a damp garage for months on end is the key I suspect.:thumb2

I had my tank Shop blase it was sparkeöing then Insider and aut since my Referenzen I allways
put a Bit of 2 strock oil in thier

Hi
I am in the process of restoring my 75 r90s and when I drained the tank it had all the old sealer from about 15 years ago knocking about in large pieces inside. That is after the previous owner has tried to tumble the inside clean on a homemade rig. Anyway I decided to look about to find a suitable cleaner and sealant for my large tank and Tank Care services in Norfolk (I think)offered products and a full service .In the end I went for them doing it as chemicals were £105 and the job done £165 plus postage. From what I can gather this is a very toxic process , needs a temp of 20c and with my tank they had to tumble it for a long while to get it back to bare metal first. It arrived back yesterday and the result is great.
It may be worth a thought
