I am considering upgrading my fuel tank on my 05 GS.

I looked at fuel cells for the back but don't want to go that route for the cosmetic side of things.

So the question is do I go for the touratech conversion at £700~ or go for a GSA tank, has anyone done this and if so what would be the best route.

Before anyone asks, no I dont want to change to a gsa (Money) and I know there are lots of fuel stations around but i regulary do 4-600 miles on a sunday or weekend and stopping every 160 miles is a pain for me, I want to Ride not be stood filling up. :augie

Never looked into a new tank but should you not be getting more than 160 out a tank? I have a 55 plate GS12 and get 210 between fill ups. Sorry not much help but if you're fuel economy could be improved it would help in the interim!

I am sure that sombody more knowledgeable will correct if I am wrong but here goes.

OEM Steel tank 24 ltr
OEM Plast tank 26 ltr
OEM GSA tank 31 ltr
TT Tank 42 ltr

Got to say I dont think that 160 between fill ups is to bad, I think that on my steel tank I got between 165 and 175 between fill ups depending on how hard I was riding, of course that is not to an empty tank that is between filling up and leaving enough in reserve for emergencies, I suppose I get somewhere in the 240 to 250 to the tank if on the big GSA tank but fill up at about 230 to be on the safe side, as I dont find the fuel guage very accurate when it gets down low. And to be fair most of my long distance it high speed motorway, if I was a little more reasonable I am sure I could get nearer 300 to tank, but I am a bit harsh on the go button.
I you have the standard steel tank you should nearly double the range if you fit the TT tank but then it is damn expensive, and how much is the extra range worth, only you can tell.

Bowser,

I have a feeling that the capacities you have quoted are for the 1150, not the 1200. Standard capacity for the 1200 is 20 litres and it's 33 for the GSA. I don't know what the Touratech tank conversion holds.

Colin, you will find this link useful if you go for the BMW tank:-

I have fitted the GSA tank to my standard 1200 and have been using it in that configuration for 15 months now. I followed the instructions put together by Dale in the above link and it was a straightforward conversion. I managed to find a tank on Ebay which cut down on the cost considerably (the tank alone is £540 without any fittings:eek:)

Bob, the touratech gives 8 litres per side so adding 16 to the 20 litre tank totalling 36.

Asside from the tank what parts are required to convert to the bmw tank (ie, pipes, panels etc)

just sell the GS

I looked into this and decided that it would cost the best part of a thousand pounds to do the job properly. I came to the conclusion that it'd be better to sell the GS and buy a GSA. The residuals would be much better too...

Colin, if you take a look at the Advrier link I posted earlier it lists all the parts that are required to complete the job.
