Ho ho!

What size fuel tanks did BMW do for the (unfaired) GS and G/S?
I was under the impression there was just a small one and a big one. I've seen capacity mentioned of 22l, 24l, 32l, 35l, 36l and probably others besides.

I'm a trifle annoyed at things not fitting quite right without modification to my para with the HPN 43l tank on it. So I think I might change it for a proper BMW tank but I'd still like a high capacity tank.

Am I right in thinking the large tank that fits the Basic/Kalahari is exactly the same as fitted to the R80 G/S PD? Would it fit my para with no drama?

The Basic was fitted with the tank from the mono ST which has a capacity of 19.5 lts from what I've read

the Kalahari got the tank from the mono PD with a capacity of 35 lts (or there abouts)

Mono PD tanks sell for silly money these days, rough and rusty ones have been making €600 on Ebay de and you'll be doing well to find one for less than £500 IMPO. THat one you've found on Ebay motors is from a German supplier and is priced as new.

What about the 100 PD tank, got the capacity but not as pricey?

I'll agree 101% with Thunder on the mono style tanks, the 24L para ones seem to go for around £200 on ebay.de. An awfull lot of money for not much extra capacity

I have a HPN tank waiting in the sidelines. I might fit it this winter or just hang on to it until I really
need it, the mods aren't too drastic and I will be doing it such that I can quickly revert the bike back to stndard small tank spec. The parts which are modified are the fairing sidepanels, seat, roo bars and oil cooler location. I bought roo bars off ebay for 1 euro and postage, faitring sides( and spare cockpit) for 58 odd euro. Seat mod involves cutting little bits out of front so I guess I should try andf get a cheap seat if I want to go the whole hog. Oil cooler relocation kit is about 60 euro. The HPN tank is supposed to be far better than any other original tank you will get, capacity is greater, weight is carried lower, and you get four mounting points for a tank rack/bag if you should desire one. It probably also puts up with a bash better than the metal tanks would. I's say stick with it, spend a few more quid on parts that can be modifed while you keep the originals for some time when you want to put it all back the the way it was originally. The most technically difficult part is probably the roo bars but I'm thinking that it will just be a case of cutting it at one of the down tubes and fitting an appropraitely long enough extension in between ( probaly tack weld it myself initially to check for size) on each side and then bolting it back on to some point on the frame or on to the crash bars. I'm guessing the roo bars are vital in supporting the instruments and fairing front but I do wonder if you can get away without roo bars and fairing sides, has anyone tried it without roo bars ands see what happens?. I guess the roo bars are handy if you need to hoist the bike with ropes/straps .

r80g/s small tank is the 19.5lt and bigger mono tank is 32lt
paralever is 24lt
The 32lt g/s mono is the same as the kalahari basic.
but i thought this would not easily fit a paralever.
the seats on the basic and paralever are different .
Also I think Bill had mentioned the subframes are all different on the basic&mono&paralever

Thanks all. I was hoping the 32l would be a straightforward fit but obviously not. I did wonder, considering the subframe differences.
I guess I'd better get a mono and a Kalahari as well, so I can do a proper comparison.

It seems he had two issues:
1. the fairing - which I don't have on mine;
2. the fuel cap/breather - I've got a flat vented one on the HPN tank so that's not an issue for me either.

There may be a third problem with regards to how the seat fits to the tank which brings me back to square one.
Maybe a 24l tank is the way forward.

I intend to chop and change between my shortened subframe and standard subframe depending on what I'm using the bike for i.e. short for day-to-day use and standard for weekends away when I can use the panniers as well. With an alternative tank I will in effect have two bikes in one.

Cos I need my comfort

Only mod is a piece out of underneath at back of seat

My 100 gs, 1992 has the hpn 43 ltr tank. No roo bars or oil cooler but came with a twin headlamp setup off a honda baja. bit of a lash up which I have changed for a better lash up. There are other options though, Have a look at Tarka's leggobike, or thunders new camel plus quite a few others. The hpn tank is really only of use on long trips but it does carry its weight low and the bike can be " scratched" surprisingly well even with a full tank. I believe there are some who would give you a good price on an hpn tank which would reduce the shock price of one of those expensive jobbies,Couldnt be bothered changing all those bits on a regular basis
