Only had the 1200 Adventure for three months, so still getting used to it. Excuse the perhaps stupid question........

Recently had the bike fully serviced and since it seems to have developed a quiet but annoying "tapet" style noise, especially from the left pot. Assuming the guy did the valve clearances as part of the service, could they be incorrectly adjusted and therefore giving off a "tapet rattle"? Do they even have "tapets"?

Apologies for BMW ignorance, and thanks in advance for your help.

Tappets should be done when the bike is cold, first thing in the morning really. What year machine are we talking about as after 2010 they are shimmed not adjustable.

Is it particularly hard to adjust them yourself then?
Assume it's in the Hayes manual.

It's a piece of piss, easier than a Morris Minor to do. Just make sure you are in the correct stroke when checking/setting them.

check end float as well. A search on here should point you in the right direction.

It's not unusual for bikes like boxers to go into a service sounding dead smooth and come out rattling.
That's because over time the valve clearances close and the noise reduces. It's better for the valve clearances to be right and better for your engine.

My Guzzis were the same

I'm not sure any more if a slightly tap tappet is a big deal. Better that than a tight one me thinks ?

totally unnecessary, even if it works, and most stuff i've used made by gunson doesn't.

Good point -

I tried their "colortune" which either made the engine run rich or weak depending which side of correct you started with. :barf
