Tapping Paranoia!

Hi there,

I haven't ridden my GS for a few days and today after a long ride I noticed that there seemed to be a distinct tapping sound coming from what appears to be the right hand side of the gearbox.

I couldn't absolutely swear that it hasn't always been like that but no I'm wondering how much and if any tapping around that area is normal!

Bike is 95 1100GS and it's running well apart from the imaginary/real tapping problem!!

How much tapping is normal on a warm engine?

Tapping on R/H side is usually the throttle body.

Hold/touch the cable pulley while it's ticking over and see if the noise stops.

Wow, that diagnosis was absolutely spot on. Hand on the pulley, noise disappears!

ticker killers do work just fitted one to r1150r and it helps wid tick over

I'm curious... are there any 'downsides' apart from the noise to leaving well alone?

I've read that if you leave it long enough, the bushes in the throttle body also start to wear to the point where it's impossible to effectively repair (even with the bing 'rebuild kit') - the problem being that the bushes aren't replaceable.

However, I believe that some proper engineering companies (Scriminger being one) can bore out and fit new bushes along with the rebuild kit's butterfly and shaft.

Just done this

Just done this very thing. Got the repair kit from Bing (it has everything you need). However getting the old bushes out is a bugger. You have to tap a thread in the old one then insert a bolt and pull. I had a old TB which I tried to do this with…….. im bloody possible. Sent them off to Scriminger who did the job for me, evidently you have to use liquid nitrogen on the bushes as you pull. Anyway I now have two “as new” TB,s and a bit of a hole in my wallet.

If you don't mind, could you post an idea of the total cost (i.e rebuild kit + Scriminger's engineering). Of course if you do mind, no problem

Ahhhhh the ££££££

Right…. First and formost I did not go the cheapest route. You can send the TBs off to Scriminger and I think there can refurbish the TBs for about £50 each, please contact them for an acrate price I am not sure what there replace for that(I know the bearings get done). I on the other hand being a clever dick, thought I would do it myself and bought the kit from Bing, well a Bing subsidiary, this cost me about £42 a TB. The kit had the all the bits and pieces you need, all moving parts springs spacers etc. This would ensue I had all new parts in my TBs

I became unstuck removing the old bearings so sent the TBs along with the refurb kit off to “the man” at Scriminger (see previous post)

The total price to me was about £90 per TB including all the P+P, Not cheap but cheaper than a new one and every part of the TB is new and the bodies themselves chemically cleaned, there look really pretty now.

This is more of a 'for future reference' thing for me - there's no discernible ticking in my TB's, but I have a '94 1100, so it may become an issue in the future. I've heard before that the bushes can be next to impossible for mortals, so I think if it becomes necessary I'll take the easy option and just ship them off to Scriminger!
