Hi can anyone tell me if the Tarrenig Rally is suitable for bigger bikes or is it mostly for trail and enduro bikes. I intend doing a few rallies this year on the Tenere (fitted with either M21 or Trellborg army specials). I have rode off road before (ktm 300) and done the Powys time card 3 times and raced local hare and Hounds 3 hour races, and done Weston beach race 3 times, BUT all on a much lighter bike.

I know the Hafren Rally is suitable which I will enter later in the year.

Advise and opinions would be welcome apart from obvious ones; take mirrors off, and sat nav off, thank you. :bow

You sound well qualified - I did it last year on my 650XC with MT21's there was one hill that caused me a problem but that was more about me than the bike

Tarrenig

Yep. Would back up Wreford Miles' answer. Did this on a 650XC as well last year. Was the first competitive event I've ever done on a bike and a tenere would sail it with your experience.
Take your number plate off if you don't want to leave it in the woods like I did. I reckon it was the best Welsh rally event of the year with a good mix of technical stuff and fast forest roads.

Tarennig

Tyres must be road legal according to last years regs, but they accepted Michelin AC10. I ran Metzeler Six Day Enduro on my XC and for the rest of the events as well during the year.
I may run TKC 80's this year, but will try them with mooses beforehand. Can't see regs changing vastly this year.

Thanks for the info Jonbontjofi
I am limited to choice of tyres due to the rear wheel being 17 inch, so it will be either a trellborg army special or a MT 21

As do Michilen with thier T63s (and I think a Desert rear is also available is a slightly larger 140/80x17 size) the T63 knobs arent as deep as the swiss army specials though.

did the event on hp2 its a good event for the big bikes you wont have a problem

I have had a email back from Kate Jones re the rally about the army specails tyres and they will be OK so that is the ones that I am going to fit. :aidan

I would not use the army special, as soon as you get in the muck and ruts, they are pretty much useless. I did it on the Dakar, and because of the deep and clay type mud, I really did not enjoy it.

I had them fitted on my DRZ400 and they were great, done green laning, road work and rode Hare and Hound races with them and never got stuck with them.
I found that they gripped well on the rockey climbs and cleared the mud out of the treads well, I just ran them at 12psi which would be to low for the Tenere due to the extra weight of the bike.

i used trelly army ones at red kite only prob i had was laeving black lines on the tarmac !!!!!! other than that for a tyre of that spec not bad
