Where's the most discreet, but still legal, place to fix the tax disc holder on a 1200GS?

Looking at the photos on this site there are clearly some very discreet places as I can't see the tax discs at all, but few are as naff and in your face as mine is, fixed to the beak.:(

I haven't found a place to put the tax disc that doesn't looks crap, ie yours, or gets soaked within a few hundred miles and so becomes unreadable anyway, now I just keep it under the seat. Although not strictly legal, coppers I have spoken to say it is no problem and wouldn't do anything about it. Mind you there's probably one somewhere who would.

Keep it in your wallet and only take it out if asked to do so, I've had my gs 3 years plus and it's never had a tax disc since the the one on it when I bought it expired. I very often go out and forget to take it.

Discreet ? I think so.
Legal ? I'm not sure, but does it really matter ? :nenau As long as the disc is displayed, I reckon that's enough. I mean, has anybody ever been chastized for not displaying a tax disc on a motorcycle in an approved position ?

Sorry is only a question.
Why put you the Tax Disc not on your Windshield ??

Alex

Mine is in a holder bolted inside the beak. Visible... but only just... ;)

Scan the original and print a copy in colour.

Put that one in the holder and keep the original under the seat or at home.

Best picture I have at the moment, but there is a hole in the bracket behind the tank panel, works well for me :thumb2

I must say that to just stick a photocopyon the inside of the windscreen (as in a car) is an excellent idea; you can make a few spares if it gets wet. If you carry the original noone is going to complain (except the bloke who steals your photocopy!) The problem doesn't arrive in France of course because we have no tax disc nor MOT - the only bit of paper to display is the small cut off bit of the insurance certifcate, of no value to anyone else and easily replaced;

In fear of being pedantic.
The law states: that the tax disc should be fitted to the front left quater of the bike and be the original item (a photo copy could get you a conviction for 'frauds and use of')

The traffic warden, officer of the law or anybody who might have lawful reason to see it 'the tax disc' is not obliged to spend time looking around the bike in hopes of finding it 'or potentialy putting themselves at risk by stepping out into the road'
Therefore if it is not displayed where they are expecting to find it, it is not deemed to be displayed on the bike and therefore not paid (in just the same way as a carpark ticket that is in your pocket instead of the windscreen of your car)

Well thats what the law states anyway :nenau Though I'll bet the local warden chappy dosn't know it.

Mine is just under the front of the left barrel, mounted on a bolt near the exaust (where the head protector is fitted to the head I think) it was put there by the dealer, in a stainless jobbie with lots of bolts.
It's covered in mud most of the time, 'just as well realy' the new one's in the top box waiting for me to get round to changing it :nenau

Oh, if I clean the glass I can see it's not been affected by the exposure to the winter roads. No issue with water ingress 'and I use the bike every day too! even when it's raining :P

Please read the above as its word for word my response.

Dickieboy. You have saved me the trouble of typing a full reply.:D

Well and good, but do you never leave your bike parked in a town/city or somewhere where a TW or Peeler just might have a look for your disc while you are not about, risking a ticket for not displaying the tax disc on the vehicle ?

There is an offence ...

... of 'failing to display' however it is not proceeded with by itself. The courts however take a dim view of 'no tax' and fines are often a multiple of the annual tax. All vehicle tax records are held on a data-base and if the machine says it's taxed you are most unlikely to get any hassle.

Having had three expensive holders broken off & stolen I keep the original in my pannier for production purposes; although I've never been asked for it. I have left the stub of the last holder in-situ for the pedantic

Having had numerous tax holders stolen, I've gone with this. Keep the tax disc on me...

It's not elegant, but it's not been stolen since.

Most tax checks are done via the number plate recognition camera`s and plod or the warden will often check via phone. Don`t mind those camera`s because as long as they pick up the scrotes who aren`t legal, I`m cool with that.

I have a colour copy on my bike with the original at home. Never had an issue.

It won`t matter soon because when we are forced to by a transmitter for road tolls they will be able to tell if it`s taxed, insured, how fast you go (wait for the tickets in the post) and where you are....!! Can`t wait...:mcgun

Fixed at the rear underneath the pillion grips. Not visible with panniers fitted. Otherwise inside the arm pocket of my jacket.
