tc - that funny whatsit on the exhaust

Obviously some sort of electrically operated valve. But what is its purpose? Just chopped my 08 on for a 12 TC so I'm wondering what this additional complication is all about.

Incidentally I couldnt find a TC without the electric suspension. How bad / dodgy is it quality wise. Is there a way to protect it and prolong its trouble free life?

helpfully,its the servo controlled exhaust valve/flap,like the old yamaha exup valve,do a search some last for ages without seizing up,some dont.

Conventional wisdom is to alter it regularly even if you don't use it, to stop the magic bits from locking up.
 
If that irritates you then go read something else.

Mate, the exhaust valve serves no other purpose other than reduce noise emissions (Euro Regs).

It is NOT a power valve / Exup thingy etc..

It can be simply disconnected at the servo, thereby leaving the valve permanently open, which also stops the bloody thing squeaking..:blast

well since the exup is just a flap in the exhaust and so is the bmw system,as i said like the yamaha :augie
 
Lol, pardon me for stating the obvious, but the SEARCH button is there for a reason, if people used it more often, maybe, just maybe the real more useful information would be more accesable, rather than having to traul thru pages of people asking the same questions, and this topic is hardly a hard thing to find using the search button is it, but hey ho, must mean im ill mannered.

Ah yes, the ESA.
I like it, and its especially good if you regularly carry a pillion / heavy luggage, as the preload can be adjusted at the push of a button.

As for reliability. I did 30k trouble free miles on my last GSA with ESA.
 
Wilbers offer a 3 years warranty but only if the shocks are serviced annually or every 12000 (ish) miles. BMW shocks are fit & forget and not surprisingly fail all too soon.

One option is to rely on the warranty. Another is to let them fail and buy some Wilbers. A third is to have them stripped by a suspension specialist at 12000 miles and then redone every year.

They are rebuildable, they just need a gas filling valve fitting.


The exhaust flap valve is a cynical EU noise regs workaround. Unlike the EXUP, it has zero effect on tuned header pipe lengths.

The search would have found that (exhaust bit anyway) in a few seconds.
 
How do you alter it? Isnt it automatic?

You press the ESA button on the LH handlebar, which will show the current setting on the LCD screen. Subsequent short presses of the button will cycle through the available damper settings (Comfort/Normal/Sport for on-road settings, Soft/Medium/Hard for off-road settings). You can do this while riding the bike. Long presses of the same button cycle through the available spring pre-load settings (solo/solo+luggage/pillion for on-road, small mountains/big mountains for off-road). These spring settings can only be changed while the bike is stationary with the engine running, and the adjustment is made using electric motors.

But just like manual suspension adjusters, if you leave them in the same position for a long period of time, the moving parts can get sticky or even seize up altogether. Occasionally changing the settings can help avoid this.
