Now guys, when I purchased my new Camhead GSA the dealer advised me not to have the knobbly option. He said that they only last about 1200 miles before they are worn out.

Having read this site people seem to rate the tyres well for on road and off road use. I am interested in the truth as 1200 miles is useless to me. I am off to Morocco later this year and although I might not be going off road and will not need knobblies I fancy trying a set, 1200 miles will not get me there and back.

So if you have used these TCK80's please advise me as to the true approx mileage they will last me for, I think P.... are talking tosh?

Thanks,
Ian :nenau

Masses of information on this site and Adventure Rider about life on those tyres. As usual it depends on how far you twist the right grip and how hard you are on the brakes. I've read of over 3,000 miles from the rear and a lot more from the front. I guess you need to be very steady to achieve that kind of life.

More life but not so good in mud are the Heideneau K60's, http://www.reifenwerk-heidenau.de/modules/reifenliste/view.php?point=2&rtyp=10&PHPSESSID=b40628e604abd0342c572c1abb4016e3&profil=162&pic=99

I got 7,500 miles from a set of those, earlier design than the current and am hoping to complete 8,000 mile trip on the set I've just fitted. In my opinion the best general purpose tyre you can fit to big GS's

I had a set put on when I went off to the Elefantentreffen. 1200 mile round trip, and they barely look scrubbed in.

TKC's should do 3 to 4000 miles :thumb

Have a look at the Heidenaus which will give you a lot more than that and have good manners on the road and in the dirt.

Yeah, but you ride like a girl :D:D:D

TKC's are a 3-4k mile tyre but they make the 1200 handle a bit strange. Feel far better on the 1150 imho. You get used to it, but my brothers 1200 adv on TKC's never gave me the same confidence in the front end as they did on the 1150.

Fronts will last longer, but if you are fairly fast on road with them, they step quite badly. If you don't look at them you'll be fine, but if you look at them before a ride, you'll ride like a tw*t :D

If you do alot off road then do it, if it's for pose value, don't bother. If you want to occasionally off road, try to find a spare set of wheels to mount the TKC's to. :thumb

3-4k for the rear, more from the front. a little tip, pick a dry day when you first put them on.i didnt and was shittin myself.but you do get used to them, made the steering a little heavier i found. hth. j

A new set of TKCs will last a road ride to Morocco, a good couple of weeks riding around on or Off road, and the ride back, quite easily.

Be aware that they are only rated for 99mph though, and if you sit at 110 two up on motorways all day, they will start cracking around the edged of the blocks :blast DAMHIK

You may not like them initially as they feel quite different- it can take some time to get used to the feeling of the blocks moving around under hard cornering or braking, but they are great tyres :thumb2

Nah. He specifically mentions tkc's. Besides, why would the dealer know anything about Karoos when tkc's are the only optional tyre choice on the gsa?

drove from north east england all the way to morocco and back fully loaded for camping and drinking, two weeks riding every day in 40 degrees heat on TKCs on my GSA.
Tyres lasted that and then another 3000 miles, did the Kielder K2 classic enduro and only then did i need to throw away the rear - it wasnt worn out, just shredded by the stones in the Kielder enduro.

1200 miles? b*llocks to whoever told you that :D

I've used TKC80s for at least the last 150,000 miles. Rears wear faster than fronts, as you might imagine. One rear on a 1200GSA did 9,000 miles to Senegal and back, but then I tend to ride quite gently when on long trips.

What will screw the tyres real quickly is travelling over 80mph for long periods. Not sure whether the motorway speed limit in Spain is still 110kph (70mph) but you can sit at that speed all day without damaging the tyres.

I have a photo of a rear TKC that was utterly and totally shagged at 800 miles , but I'm buggered if I can find it :blast

It was fitted on Stromfultrator's Vstrom on a Moto-Morocco trip a good few years back, but then, old Wayne does ride like a tit

:augie

I ride like a pussy as Fanum will confirm and I got about 4-5k out of TKCs. If you're not going off road though why bother? Tourances will handle dirt tracks and the like without any problem and will last 8-9k easily.

KC80's

They handle ok on the road but I got between 3 & 4000 out of a rear and loads left on the front.
