Does anyone have one of these for loan or a design to make one?

I am going to need to move the HES assembly to a new cover plate

Can't you spin the crank and just look through the little window on the back on the cylinder head? Like when you adjust the valves?

I've never bothered with the tool.

As long as you set TDC using the window and scribe the plate / front cover to mark its position, the engine doesn't have to stay at TDC. Just set it back to TDC when you re-fit the plate. It's best to re-check the timing anyway.

I undid the crankshaft pulley nut using Steptoe's tip - remove plug caps, get a socket / wrench on the crankshaft pulley nut and tap the starter button while (firmly) holding the socket wrench. Works a treat.

If you rest a screwdriver in the plug hole you can see as the piston approaches TDC without the need for a special tool.

True - that's what I do for valve adjustment. However if you need a precise 'at' TDC then you need to use the window.
