I was just scanning through the hot airheads for some inspiration and was just wondering what sort of ignition a bike like this would be running and where is the wiring from the alternator routed??

I'm sure I've seen photos of an airhead engine fitted with a Rotax single-cylinder generator/ignition assembly in place of the standard alternator, but I've searched and can't find any information, perhaps this could be a cheaper option?

I am curious about the air filter. It looks like a foam one, not a K&N type. I assume its an HPN part. Anyone seen any close up pics of one ?

I wonder how they seal the junction between the airbox and the stainless plate that holds the new filter. I am thinking of changing my setup. I do a lot of gravel road riding so am often travelling in the dust of other bikes. When I remove my paper filter there is a fine layer of dust in the airbox which means its getting in somewhere. The standard snorkles arent that good in river crossings as water will splash over the top of the engine straight into the snorkles. Im not sure if that setup will be better but you could make a sheild around the front and sides to deflect water

Plate seals with a rubber membrane which is compressed when you fit it to the bike with the supplied shaft which mounts to the gearbox.

Comes with a foam air filter but can also be fitted with a K&N or equivalent filter from an 1100 / 1150 oilhead.

If you fancy one I have a spare on in the garage which was fitted to one of the bikes briefly. :augie

Here's the HPN Airfilter (paper filter).
Paper for the sand don't use oil based filter as sand sticks and you can't clean it on the fly!! Foam pre filter just reduces air volume intake:augie

KN for the UK mud!!!! or road

HPN air filter has a solid top its from a BMW 1972-76 2002tii 20L
KN part no KN E-2290.

The plate is bolted to the air box base through the centre bolt.
The filter is held in place with Neoprene Bands for that quick change

Possibly be interested. How much ? I havent decided if this is my best option or to get a foam filter to fit in the original position. Do they require jetting changes ? I thought the CV carbs were finiky to changes in intakes ?

Your bikes been fine just as it is for the past 25 - 30 years why does it suddenly need a fancy filter to make it work properly?

You havent read the posts. A fine layer of dust makes its way through the paper filter and deposits on the inside of the airbox, therefore into the engine aswell. I want to change the bike to 1000cc this winter and dont want dust getting into nice new pistons. Ive never had a problem on my dirt bikes with dust making its way past foam filters.

If you are afraid of dust you should be careful about using the BMW 2002 filter mentioned above. Yes, it fits but it has a totally different paper then the HPN-filter.
The HPN-filter has a tendency to clog up in rain.

Another solution is to use the standard filter and a thin layer of grease inside the snorkels and the top of the filter-box.

I tried to ring Unifilter today (they are in Australia, New Zealands West Island) but they get today off (Anzac Day), Unlike us Kiwis whose Government has screwed us over. I want to have a talk to them to see what will work best for me. If anyone will know they will. OutBack Aussie has dust like you wouldnt believe !!! Fine talcome powder dust that gets everywhere

And don't you just love the way we let some blow over to you occaisionally:D

Went to ride a logging road last week, road surface was 6-8 inches of talcum powder  The trees, rocks etc on the side of the road were grey from the dust. The thought of meeting a laden logging truck coming the other way resulted in a rapid about face :thumb2 Conditions would have taxed even a Unifilter.:eek

PS Phil I enjoyed my day off. :thumb I thought the NZ in Anzac referred to you blokes  you are right your Govt has bent you over on that one :D

If ANZAC falls on a weekend , we dont get the next working day off. Bas##rds !!

I contacted UNIFILTER today. They modify a standard BMW GS filter by removing the paper bit and fitting a foam type filter. Cost about Aus $60.
I think I will go down that route

Have done that myself when a paper element was trashed by gearbox oil. Bought some filter foam from the bike shop and glued it in. Can't remember exactly but probably used some S/S mesh to stop the foam getting sucked in.
But for $60 it's not worth rooting around with yourself. Interested to hear how it goes re noise, maintenance etc. Can you buy direct from Unifilter?
