Have done that myself when a paper element was trashed by gearbox oil. Bought some filter foam from the bike shop and glued it in. Can't remember exactly but probably used some S/S mesh to stop the foam getting sucked in.
But for $60 it's not worth rooting around with yourself. Interested to hear how it goes re noise, maintenance etc. Can you buy direct from Unifilter?

Yea. They dont have them forsale, they just rebuild the one you send them. If I can get the picture posting thing sorted I will post pics when I get it back.
