Technical Virgin in need of help!!

Is there anyone out there that can help a "technical Virgin" like myself, due to my spiralling divorce costs have decided to get out my "Clymer" manual and replace my Choke/idle cable myself..................in a bid to save the hideous costs of a BMW mechanic......so far have managed to get the Petrol Tank off, undoe the old Choke cable at the "handle bar" end and am now following it to the Right hand side of the bike where the advice from my manual seems a tad vague though probably not in the least to everyone else but I am struggling to release' tother end!!! something to do with a clip that I cant find!!

Forgive my incompetance but we all have to start somewhere so if anyone in the Guiseley,Leeds area or elsewhere can shed any light I would much appreciate it so as I can get on and enjoy this cracking weather....many thanks John

Looks as though everyone is avoiding you, never fear though there's always some sad git who'll read anything.

Try the thread that lets you into the maintenance manual, it is very easy to understand and there is a section on choke cable replacement.

Hope you get on ok.

Having never done it I would suggest undoing both ends pull it out. Put in the new one ensuring that both ends are fastened up and when it does not work do what you have already done and shout for help, you have just cut out the middle man well done.

cables!!

What a poxy job this is,you have your tank off now you will have to take the battery out and then take the four bolts that hold the motronic unit to the battery case just leave it in situ.
Then remove the battery case 4x 10mm nuts,lift it up a little and you will see your cables go into a black plastic thingymijig you have to bend a metal tab down and pull the black plastic thing out it sort of slides out from underneath the battery box with your cables intact then you can see a pully wheel to which your cables are connected,I don't have ABS, if you have, it will be a bigger job im not sure if the unit next to the battery will have to be taken out or wether it can just be moved with pipes left in place,anybody esle know?confused:hope this helps.Andy

Thanks a lot for all your assitance in particular Andy it is refreshing to know that there are some "mechanics" who use correct glossary when refering to these things, words such as "Thingymjig "are very comforting and reassuring....I am tackling it tomorrow night with a competent mate drafted in ....will tell you how it goes

oh my good god, when you said this was a t**t of a job you weren't joking, have got ABS, (what an overated thing) which I have had to undo to try and get access to remove black plastic thingymajigy.....got to it after releasing throttle cables which meant undoing and twisting throttle bodies.................and have now found that the plastic "wedge" that is attatched to the tother end of the idle cable had infact snapped off....so with the bike in a lot of pieces!!!! work has been suspended pending a trip to "Motorworks" tomorrow!!!!

Q. Do you ever get the feeling that you wish you hadn't started something?

Fortunately me mate Shaun has given me a lift so if you should ever read this cheers mate

Thingumyjig...you want to try repairing the central turret oil seal on a centurian tank. Its a doddle when the sky hooks are working and the elbow grease hasn't dried in the cling film.

Of course there are differing degrees of difficulty for instance, take the wazzock triangle dangler twister excruciater...yes please take it. Now that requires a multi armed ambedextrous urangatang on heat with a 49 foot length of scaffold tubing and a mattress.. blimey thats a bitch of job even after you've got the abs out of the way.

Never mind I'm sure that you will get it sorted, just keep telling yourself that its only a cable......maybe a good reason why dealers charge so much for these little 'just' jobs.
