Anybody use an Android TV Box?

We're spending so little time in France these days that it doesn't seem worth paying for Canal+ anymore. (We ditched CanalSat last year.) Anyway, we thought, we can always realign our dish and plug in the old Humax Freesat box for UK television. Unfortunately, Astra 28 (or whichever) have shrunk their footprint and to pick up the signal in Southern France, you need a huge dish, which cannot be safely attached to the chimney pot ...

However, the guy in the TV shop said that, if it was UK TV that we wanted, we should consider an Android box. We've Googled and although we've found plenty for sale on Amazon for under 100€ and a few reviews on YouTube, we are still at a bit of a loss as to how they actually pick up TV signals.

Can anyone provide an idiot-proof explanation?

They dont pickup TV, they use streaming over the internet so in theory you would get BBC iplayer and stuff like that and a good app called TV Catchup. You would also get stuff like Netflix. Why I say in theory is because most of the providers lock their channels down to geographic regions basically for UK use only. Can be sorted some of the time by using a proxy (fakes your actual location).

If you haver a good internet connection it might do what you want.

Ok, that makes sense. So if I buy and use an Android box in France, I'm going to have exactly the same issues using iPlayer as I do on my laptop. Though, presumably Android technology uses the mobile networks for connectivity. I'm not sure then what would be the benefit of using an Android Box over a laptop with a good internet connection? Indeed, is there any? I'm now wondering whether a Netflix subscription might be a better bet.

Yes if you cant get iplayer on your laptop it isnt going to work on anything in that location. The Android TV's use both WIFI and cabled network not the mobile network. Android is just an operating system that happens to be mostly on phones but you can get laptops and all sorts with it on as well.

Thanks again.

Just looked and Netflix isn't available here either. Looks like it might be worth paying for a decent proxy instead. We've tried a couple of the freebie ones with mixed results.

Anyone have any recommendations for a reliable proxy app?

I use Tunnelbear on my Android devices to use iplayer etc abroad, and it works pretty well, is easy to set up and good value. It is a little twee but I can live with the cheery bear digging away. :)

I have used tv box but i was not satisfied with that. Now i am using an android app name "France Android Live Tv ONLINE" to access all french channels on my android mobile Galaxy s3 absolutely free. sometimes it causes problems bt I think you should also try this app.Download it from google play by enetring name France Android Live Tv ONLINE. and the main reason behind this is that you are not pernmanently staying in france so why to pay for something which you can get absolutely free.

If you have an Android Phone or Tablet you can get most films including latest releases and many TV series FOC with the right app. Run instantly or download and view on tablet or phone and 'Cast' to TV if you get a Google Chromecast Dongle and have HDMI port on TV.

Can't understand why BBC won't stream iplayer to non-UK servers.
Why doesn't it just add some adverts and make a few quid.
