Hi,

A friend of mine is thinking about getting a 660 tenere. They only thing he's worried bout is the BHP. Whats the Tenere Like day to day on the road?

:)

Cheers:beerjug:

What is he looking to get out of the bike?
Commute, leisure, etc.
As an only bike they are a great budget all-rounder, able to rub shoulders with other marques on road and off.....
Mine was fine with 'A' roads, in town and on gentle trails.
Fuel consumption was low and UK and Euro motorway speeds could be held without a problem.
Comfort was reeasonably good and load carrying capacity excellent, especially now there is more kit available for the machine.

He commutes to work on his bike. Does both coutry lanes and motorway work.

We are also planning a trip to russia as well, thus why the Tenere seemed like a good choice.

Then why not......
Tell him to do it. I can't see a reason why the XTZ can not do any of that.:thumb2

Hi Servdave.....

I have a XTZ ...... I've had 2 1150GS's and my last mount was a FJR. Because I was'nt using the FJR much I sold it and got a XTZ plus cash in my pocket.
One of the best moves I've made, for such a low BHP it goes very well. My bike has full Ohlis front and back and handles just as well as any of my GS's
only gripe I have is the hight, I fitted Metat Mule lowering kit and brought the forks up a tad.
This bike has given be back my biking mojo, it's like riding a big crosser (its fun). The XTZ will do every thing just as good as any GS at half the cost.

:)

I must admit, I've been thinking of getting one but notice that they're coming up second hand much cheaper than I thought. While that's a good thing, does tend to get me thinking that maybe people are getting shot due to some flaw.

All I've discovered so far is that the seats are very high, vibes can me intrusive and that the Cush drive is suspect. I assume they've sorted the low speed injection problems of the XT660.

I'd only want one as a hack.

Nothing wrong with Tenere's, as said above they will do most things but remember they are built to a price (which is high now) back in early 09 you could get a new one for £4500 otr.
Enjoyed mine, only sold because i got a Tiger 1050 but would have another Ten tomorrow :thumb2

Apart from sustained high speed motorway work. You wouldn`t want to try cruising for a couple of hours above about 80 and they feel much more happy between 65-75 in my opinion.
A GS is much better at this.
All the other stuff is just as much fun on the Tenere though.

As said ....the Tenere is built to a price (Italian)and you get what you pay for, the quality of BMW now days is not great to say the least.
The Tenere is no motorway muncher but what single is? The 660 engine had been around for donkeys and is a proven unit.
Again Yamaha prices went up a far bit this year, I think the reason for so many used ones is that the seat hight puts people off, I'm short in the arse but am used to racing MX and enduro bikes.

The Tenere is worth a go:thumb

There never was a problem with the surging on the Tenere, only on the R and X models. And a few people have ridden the Ten around the world so they can't be all that bad. Every bike that comes onto the market will have it quirks and problems. Check out the XT660.COM site if you want more info

There is one major flaw with the (baby) Tenere, its the regulator connector plug which has no cover on and where it is situated it gets all the crap from the front wheel and corrodes quickly.
Fortunately it is easily fixed.
Most users put grease or silicone sealant in the top and cover with tape or a rubber cover.
Otherwise its a great bike.
I'm soon to part with mine as a PX for my new Super Tenere.
