He's pretty good at finding little gems in the supermarkets that you might not spot or think are too cheap to be any good. Only problem is, once he recommends a wine, the demand and inevitably the price increases.

Sounds good. I personally am not so good with watching these sorts of UTube video´s as I am never sure who is behind them and if there is any bias i.e. sponsorship.
Also one man´s taste is not for everyone so whilst probably a great step in guide I prefer to make my own opinion. But, hey agreed, they are what they are - a guide - and then you try yourself.
I used to be a bit of a wine snob only going for the high end French wines which are now way too expensive for my ´´dead´´ nose. I was buying CNduP and some of the nice Paulliacs or Bordeaux´s at EURO 30 a bottle which are now closer to 70 - 100...
Back when I lived in Chile 1996 - 1999 there were about 15 or so wine houses, the bulk of Chilean wines went in 24 tonne tank containers and was blended into the likes of Tescos, or M&S or ASDA `´blended Chilean Wine´´. I know, we shipped them week in week out.
That was 30 years ago and they have come a long way since then. So many more wine houses offering somewhat ´´heavy´´ reds but some top class ones too. Here I do still have some expertise.
My sense of smell has been severely depleted since covid and a recent sinus operation so my ´´nose ´´ no longer works so all the nice aromas are lost on me. I now go for the average EURO 10-13 bottles from the big French supermarket chains and there are some nice ones out there. Still prefer a French Bordeaux if possible....

Most of these 'tube channels are bollocks. Gilbey and I seem to have similar tastes, whether it is everyday plonk or more serious wines like white Burgundy or Ribera del Duero. He is also quite cynical, like me, about the supposed award systems and mystique that makes some people think certain bottles are worth hundreds of pounds.

yesterday, I bought a bottle of Soave Classico in Tesco and another in Aldi. Just noticed when putting them in the fridge, Tesco one is labelled as Superiore, which is a separate DOCG rather than the Aldi's DOC
Tesco is normally £8.25 but £6.56 with the 25% off. Aldi one was a fiver as it is in their weekly offer bin with a chianti.
It has been very warm here today, 23C in the conservatory, so I will open both and do a comparison. No video, you will be pleased to hear.

I understand economy of scale of containers of wine, but the bottle and the cork have a price too
Some of the bottles you buy around the 10 quid mark here, can be found at around or below 4 euros in Italy. That's Tavernello's territory.
Risk-free table wine is generally (rule of thumb ofc) around 5/6 euros (at least up to a few years ago). Below you can get in risky/headache territory.
I'm just curious more than anything.
Said that, I regularly drive back with a case (or two
) of wine in the back of my car when I drive to/from Italy. Sometimes I fetch the same bottles this side of the channel and noted that the price increase is not always linear.
Very decent 15/6 euros bottle can be priced 18/19 quid here, while other, sometimes cheaper wines, get outrageously high prices.
Not sure if other countries (exporting different quantities?) have different price conversions on average.
Got some of Gilbey's content on Instagram, but I really don't find him palatable anymore.

Many would attest to you being a bit curious.
I can only speak of the UK market. The alcohol duty on a bottle of wine is fixed, based on alcohol bands, in 0.5% increments.

Look at the bottom, blue section. For a £7 bottle of wine you only have about 60p to pay for the wine. Pay a tenner and you get wine that cost more than 3 times that price. Hence paying a couple of quid more can get a big improvement.
The base price for the wine will be the same in Italy, the difference will mostly be tax.
