Test rode my 1986 G/S PD yesterday , went allright.

When i got he bike last year it had been fitted with a R100 front end and uprated tp 1000cc, luckily the last owner kept most of the original pars.
I prefer the feel and smooth running of the R80 so i brought it back to original spec

Now i just need to balance the carbs, will do the first couple of houndred miles steady to run it in .

The only thing im not sure about is , its been fitted with lowered foot pegs which makes the gear lever feel a bit high .

That's an interesting observation about the 1000CC not running as smooth as the 800CC. Was it a quality conversion set up correctly or do you think this is a inherent characteristic? I ask as I have an R80 engine in my 2016 Ural, and was wondering about a 1 ltr upgrade? Thanks

Best engine was the R75/5 and the R80...if going bigger ( extra inertia/weight etc ) then I would go the Siebenrock route. I replaced my R80G/S with 1000cc RS barrels...pinked a little but went like stink...also lumpier. IMHO these engines are best at 800cc

As Kenny has stated if your thinking of upgrading go Siebenrock, the pistons ate much lighter then standard . I have changed a standard R100R , twinplugged , with the Siebenrock power kit and i reckon that its about as smooth as a standard R80 , with more grunt. The conversion on my G/S was with standard (heavey) BMW pistons so it was a bit viby especially around 3000RPM. It was also fitted with an oil cooler which the R80 doesnt need. I find that the 800cc on the G/S has adequate power for the type of riding i do with it, especially with the low ratio bevel.I also wanted the low compression just in case i do endup taking the bike across to Morroco where the petrol isnt so good.

I got a little bit more weight to carry so was thinking no replacement for displacement

now that's simply awesome :D:green gri

I have an R80gs basic with the siebenrock 1000cc kit on it and I have to say it definitely feels more pokey than any standard 1000cc boxer ive owned.
