I presume you clever chaps have done this
Tethering iPhone to my MacBook to use my 3G on me MacBook instead of paying for a dongle ???
Can it be done ?

If you're on O2 then they'll want to charge you an extra monthly fee to allow this :(

Well spill the beans ?????

This may help

Enable tethering on the iPhone by tapping Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering.

Tap Internet Tethering to switch it on.
Connect the iPhone to the computer using USB or Bluetooth.

USB
Connect the iPhone to the computer using the USB cable
If necessary, follow any prompts on the computer to configure a new network connection

Bluetooth
Enable Bluetooth on your iPhone and computer
Pair your iPhone with your computer (Windows): Click the Bluetooth icon in the Notification area (system tray), select Add a Bluetooth Device, and follow the onscreen instructions.

When pairing is complete, click the Bluetooth icon in the Notification area, select Show Bluetooth Devices, highlight your iPhone, and then click the Properties button.

Click the Services tab, then check the Wireless iAP checkbox, and click OK.

Pair your iPhone with your computer (Mac OS): Open Bluetooth Preferences, click Set Up New Device and follow the onscreen instructions.
When pairing is complete, make sure the option Use device as a network port is selected.

Connect to your iPhone (Windows): Click the Bluetooth icon in the Notification are (system tray) and select Join a Personal Area Network.
Click Connect.

Connect to your iPhone (Mac OS): Click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, choose your iPhone, and then choose Connect to network.

Your iPhone should now have a blue bar at the top of the screen to show that Tethering is working.

is it not possible to tether an iphone to a laptop unofficially with a jailbreak app, thus using the phone's data plan?

Its works on T-Mobile using an iPhone 4 without paying extra for the tethering.

In the General settings there is a Personal Hotspot option which appeared when I did the last software update.

On my wife's' Iphone 3 also on TMobile she doesn't have the personal hotspot but can just turn on Tethering without any extra charge ( on a £15 month by month contract).

Use your iphone browser (safari) to jailbreak the phone (jailbreakme.com). Then once broken download an app called Mywi. This'll effectively turn your iphone into a wireless network point that utilises the 3G connection.

You can then tether your PC via usb, bluetooth or wireless.

WTF is tethering?

My iphone is linked to my wireless network, so is my MacBook, am i missing something?:nenau:nenau

Tethering is...

....using the iPhone/smartphone as an external modem so you access the Web via the phone connection. If the data plan does this for no extra cost it is very useful when out and about/travelling.

Just watch out for going over monthly data limits - phones have quite low limits compared with Mobile Broadband 3G dongles (say 1GB on a phone, 15GB on a dongle). And also remember that going abroad ALWAYS costs ££££!
