The ‘79 California Rebuild Thread

Had a spare 40 mins, so I assembled the rear/front brake master cylinder with its new piston and seals.

The first reassembly in the project!

Time for a reward.

Grease it all up and slap it in. Not a bad rule for life.

Just rebuilt the brakes on my Ducati, I’m sure that grease they supply is KY jelly

Morning fellas.

Not much to report sadly, I spent most of the weekend doing other things, but I do now have a full list of all the standard nuts and bolts used in a Guzzi T3 California, and Boltbase have relieved me of a few quid as I plunge into their stainless fasteners catalogue.

These are most of them if you’re interested.

I’m also in the stages of finalising supplies - spokes and nips from Germany, obscure unobtainable items from the Netherlands (rubber instrument holder sleeve if you’re interested) and another mahoosive Stein Dinse order about to hit their books. I’d buy their shares now if I were you. Or DHL. It’s a sign when the dog knows the delivery fella and she waits by the door for his almost daily arrival.

Im also in the final stages of sorting all the bits out to take up to Mikeyboy, helped enormously by the changes to lockdown. I feel a long walk in the Melton Mowbray area is essential to my mental health.

So all the casings, fork legs, wheels and a few other alloy bits and pieces will be heading up to him next week for the treatment.

I’ve also found a local fella to paint the tank and side panels.

This weekends job is to sort every thing into assembly stages, get the garage clear, sort the working table and get ready to start building up the frame, engine and gearbox when they come back in June.

Finally it’s time to take the plunge on some pricey bits, and here’s where I could do with your help. I need:

- rear shocks. I’m thinking The Shock Factory. Any suggestions?

- exhaust system. Currently Armours Ltd are top of the list. Any other suggestions?

- tyres & tubes. I’m thinking Metzler Roadtec 1 as that’s what I have on my GS and I like them.

- chrome bits. All have a little corrosion, I could get them rechromed but new items aren’t that much more expensive

- luggage. The boxes are fecked. Anyone got a set they don’t want?

Morning :beerjug:

Stuff I can comment on;

Tyres ~ Bridgestone BT45's get an almost universal vote on the Tonti framed bikes. I ran them on my Lemon and despite wanting to fit some old skool Metzlers recently to my Cali I was persuaded to go Bridgestone. Very glad I did, they suit the bike really well. Go for skinny as again, that suits the bike well; 110/90 rear & 100/90 front.

Shocks ~ I'm not familiar with The Shock Factory but a popular period 'upgrade' was to fit Koni shocks. These are still available as Ikon. I recently replaced the shocks on my bike and nearly went Ikon, finances dictated otherwise though so I went with Hagon. I wouldn't normally use Hagon as I consider them 'budget' shocks but you know what, I've been pleasantly surprised as they are absolutely fine. You can also configure them how you like (chrome body/spring/black/collar/no collar etc etc). If you take the Hagon sticker off (I couldn't be arsed ) I also think they look the part with the chrome collars.............

Edit: Exhaust ~ You can't beat the slash cut Lafranconis IMHO.....not cheap though.

I think Keihin look better than Armours. More "stock".

Bridgestone BT45s work well on Guzzis.

Rechroming may well be a better job than new parts. Can be very expensive though.

Edit: Another vote for Hagon shocks.

Cheers chaps, I knew I could rely on you! Armours look quite stock I thought:

But you’ve got to love anything called “slash cut Lafranconi”

Thanks for the tyre info, I hadn’t thought of them. I’ll check out Hagon. Like you I’d always thought of them as a bit “budget”.

I put Armours on my Spada and the silencers were much slimmer than the oe Guzzi ones. That was years ago though.

Shock factory, great build quality, great guarantee, speak to Mike himself and he will build to your spec. I got them for my Eldorado and they transformed the ride and handling. Highly recommended.

Cheers Ron - yes I had one of their shocks on my last Pan European, it was excellent.

But their prices seem to have gone up a lot since then!

Avon Roadriders are also superb.
Put them on the convert, my last SP3 & will put a set on the Strada b4 I take it to Italy next year.

If we're allowed to travel that is.
If not I'm sure the Guzzi club will arrange something to celebrate 100 yrs of Moto Guzzi...

Well another happy evening passes sorting out the wiring. Cleaning up connectors, re soldering the few that need it, re sleeving and taping the loom, and generally tidying up. Very good for the mental health.

.............

I'm sure the purists would grumble but, especially if you can fit it in the original shell, I think that's fab.............the standard unit, even with a halogen bulb, is pretty dire to say the least and, IMO at least, I think a 'bit of modern' chucked in would look really good.

Oh, and going over your wiring for your 'mental health'......you're joking right? That would certainly do something for my mental health, but not in a good way ;)

Morning Andres

Yeah I’m just weird really.

I do like the LED light, and it’s only £29 so I’ll give it a go and see how it looks.

This evening’s job, get these cleaned up.
