The ‘79 California Rebuild Thread

Cheers WP.

Well I ran all the gear up to see Mike, who had a good look over the heads. Bottom line is I need new valve guides, and he can cut in the new valves, so basically a brand new top end, to go with new barrels and pistons.

I’ll also have new front and rear suspension, new discs and pads, a new FD (internally any way), clutch is new, all the brake components will be new, wheels will be completely refurbished, and so much more.

No family holiday this year though. Or food. Or clothes.

It's still going to be original though, like Trigger's broom:D

Funny that’s the exact phrase I had in mind as I was writing it!

Wonder what’s in here?

I go the tank out in the sunshine today - it’s off to the painter on Tuesday, along with the side panels. Gloss black and hand painted lines, just like Chris used to do (sniff).

And then all the chrome, to get it priced up for re-plating. There’s a lot.

May one enquire as to whom one is using for the paintwork. Local per chance?

Cheers.

Ratty.

As you asked so politely. Vince at Abingdon Custom Bikes is doing it.

I’m thinking of changing the white stripe to gold (it was an OE option) what you all fink?

For me it’s white.

But there again, if I was investing as much as you seem to be I’d return
the whole bike back to standard.

It’ll be worth much more that way, and IMHO, more desirable.

But then again, it’s not mine. And everything you want to do with your bike is exactly fine by me Nin.

Keep up the good work.

:beerjug:

FWIW (which is SFA as it's your bike) my fave colours for the Cali are as per my old one which Johno23 now owns. I think, but am not sure, it was a Merkin only colour?

Whatever, I'm not a stickler for originality and like OR says, your bike, your choice :)

Black and Gold always reminds me of the John Player Special racing car I had as a kid.

It's a good colour combination, and if you want it, go for it. When Mikeyboy made my special, rather than go for the blue frame like the originals it was styled after, I wanted to go for BRG as growing up my dad's bike's frame was green.

Get it how you want it, as you'll probably not get it done again. :thumb2

Good feedback, thanks fellas. Black with gold pinstripe is an OE option, but there aren’t many examples out there.

I think black and white will work actually - it’s the classic Cali look after all. Even looks right on the modern ones.

Hi Nin, I am Just outside Kidlington nearer to Blechington, but usually working at Hartwells ford at least 2/3 times a week.

Looking to get paintwork sorted for one of my Triumphs. :beerjug:

Ah that is close. The Hartwells guys use a firm in Witney called Dent and Screen tech or something - 07831 193999. They did a good job on Mrs Nin’s car when that lamp post leapt out at her.

I’ve seen some of Vince’s work and it’s very nice quality. Will report back on price ...

Speaking of prices, I got the quotes back from the platers today (Ashford Chroming Services if you’re interested), nice of them to work on a bank holiday.

But. F**king sh**ting b*ll*xing w*nk!

Over £1.2k to replate those bits!

When I can buy almost all of them new for under £400!! Jaysus I’m in the wrong trade. Maybe I ticked “gold” instead of “chrome”.

Time for a rethink in the shiny stuff.

The cost of chroming ( good chroming) seems to have gone mad. I wanted to rechrome the original rims of my Norton.it was cheaper to buy new alloy flanged rims plus spokes and have them built than have the originals chromed:eek: ............I’m just going to store the originals :blast

Well huge thanks to the Guzziriders forum, I’ve had a quote from Chromefix http://www.chromefix.co.uk/ that comes in around half the price.

It’s still cheaper to buy some of the parts new, but the difficult bits like rear rack and headlight brackets will get the shiny treatment after all.
