Are really rather good.
I'm just about to go away for nine days on my 1600, putting all my clothes, electrical bits'n'bobs, maps, spare gloves, washbag, mini iPad and shoes into the bike's two panniers' inner bags, which the load did not fill.
Just as a let's see, I then put the same load into the - apparently much smaller * - XR's inner bags. The whole lot fitted, with still some room to spare and definitely without having to force the zip or ram the lids shut. That an empty XR pannier will also take a Shoei flip-front helmet is a bit of a bonus, too.
Are they quite adequate enough for most sensible applications and up to two / three weeks' touring (do a bit of washing)? Most definitely. Well done, BMW!
* The panniers' size is one of the apparent criticisms I had read about; probably spawned by the 50 litres (and nothing less) brigade.
