As useful a way to get the steps in and maybe learn something along the way.

There are 54 churches recognised as being within the orbit of the City of London and no less than 15 ruins, all within roughly a square mile. It’s long been an intention of mine to visit them all, so armed with the map, I have made a start this morning.

As it’s a Saturday, not all the churches are open. Those that aren’t I’ll hopefully go back to, to snap a picture or two of the interiors. Two of the churches that were shown as shut, later proved to be open, hosting events that I hadn’t expected.

Church 1 - 1 All Hallows Barking by the Tower

Recorded as being the oldest church in the City, where no less than the church where William Penn (who went on to establish Pennsylvania) was christened. Besides this honour, it was and remains the spiritual home of Toc H, along with strong maritime links. The churche’s crypt museum is worth a visit, with its Roman age floor, artefacts and military links.

The descriptions of the pieces (I did my best to photograph them) are at least interesting in their own way.

A so called, Guild Church, on behalf of two City of London Livery Companies: The Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers and the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers.

The church was shown as shut on Saturdays but was open and home on the day to a gathering of Orthodox Christian Indians:

Again, I had expected the church to be locked. However, the lights were on and I could hear noises coming from inside. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I went to see what is going on.

It was a meeting of PRAUS, some some sort of men’s’ help and guidance organisation.

Fabulous - thanks. I like to visit a church on my travels, but rarely do here as I mostly escape to nature where God is in abundance.

Thanks to our intrepid explorer :clap

I'll wager Henry had a rough time at school 😳
