6 months into GS ownership, I rather like my Anakee IIIs - plenty of grip, confidence inspiring, but a little a noisy. My front is now pretty worn and the rear getting squared off after about 7,500 miles.

I try to get the odd weekend away for light greenlaning in Wales and am planning my first trips around Salisbury Plain and some rides in Yorkshire and Lakes next year, as well as a return for week trip on the gravel trails in the high Alps. The Anakees have held up really well so far actually in all conditions, but when faced with mud they've been pretty pants, but, conversely, they've been outstanding on winding tarmac roads.

My riding otherwise is entirely on-road - commuting about London every day and the odd weekend ride somewhere, mainly on tarmac.

Ideally, I want to buy a spare set of wheels with TKC80s fitted for the occasional trip, but this hinges on the other half allowing some spare wheels knocking around the flat.

In reality, my only option really is to fit another set of Anakee IIIs and temper my off road riding to the lighter stuff...

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

Hi,

I have had exactly the same dilemma. I live in Oxfordshire, but commute in and out of London daily, then head to Salisbury Plain at weekends etc...

Agree with you on the AnakeeIII, I was pretty impressed with them onroad and even off road in the dry they were fine.....but the age old issue is when the weather turns. After my Anakee's wore out I tried a set of TKC70's which are their Heidenau K70 Scout equivalents. The TKX70's were a bit better off-road, but only by a 'bit', they were OK on tarmac - compatible with the AnakeeIII, but they were louder and my bike had a wieve on anything in the higher speed range :-)

As I am covering 24k miles a year, I have strapped a set of PR4Trails on for the winter as assume I won't be going anywhere off the blacktop till spring when they'll be worn out and I'll face the same dilemma as yourself. I am off to Eastern Europe on the bike in August, so will need a bike for the blackstuff then something to handle high passes and gravel/singletrack when I get there, so most likely turn to the TKC70's again but keep my speed down on the Autobahn's on the way there.

If you try something else, let us all know as many of us in the same situation I am sure!

I'm on my second set of TKC 70's, really like them and no problem at speed, good in the wet. not so good on mud but great on the gnarly back roads.

In my experience going off road you really do need tyres that are 50/50 like tkc80s if the trye maker says they are 90/10 towards road thats were they belong. I had the pleasure using TKC80s on a rough track my friend had brand new tourance enduro if my memory serve me right he could hardly move and the TKCs were not a problem in same conditions. Problem is tyre wear. My choice at the moment are Anakee 3s good on tyre life and I wont go near mud and wet grass is a problem lol. Good luck maybe try k60 scouts

her indoors has got to go.........

You've heard it the second time.

I'm in a similar position on my WC GSA, having used Annakee 3 (2pr), TKC70 (1pr), PR4 (2pr). I live in the middle of the Salisbury Plain, and although the PR4 are fine on dry trails if ridden carefully, I definitely want something with a bit more grip. Sadly the performance of the TKC70, combined with Continental's woeful aftercare, mean I would need serious convincing to try them again.

I'm a massive fan of the PR4, but I'm going to throw on a pair of Avon Trailrider in the New Year for the sake of change. The few people who have so far commented on them seem to rate them highly, even against the PR4...

Got Anarkee 3's loads of grip superb in the wet but noisy both squared off after 5500
might try the new Avons next.
