The Faroe Islands 2015

Ferries all booked, and hostel on route, and hostel in Torshavn for the duration - anyone else sorted?

Sorry chap - i did a talk on my trip last week in Derby. I went in August. It was a long slog, 1200 miles to the Faroe ferry at Hirstals in one day - left home, drove to the channel, over the channel, then rode to Hirstals in time for the 10.30 boarding......but then a full day and a hlf to kick back, drink Foroya beer and recover.

It was very foggy when I was there, and the wind was incredible - be prepared to be blown clean across the road at times, I was leaning like going round a hairpin, to go straight at times. My pannier lid was ripped clean off and blown 500 yards down the mountain...I got it back. Bungied it back on for the rest of the trip. Shopping much the same as home here, except beer and spirits are hard to come by, all Government controlled. Buy some duty free on the ferry!

Phenomenal scenery though. I had a personal pilgrimmage to make for my father - he was skipper on North Atlantic convoy escorts from March 1940, was bombed in the approaches to Torshavn, and rescued from the water by Faroese fishermen who rowed out to get him and the other surviving crew through the hail of machinegun fire from the two Heinkels attacking. One of the Heinkels was shot down by a bren gun manned by a platoon of Lovat Scouts and 'The Plane' is one of the icons on the tourist map today - the site of where that plane was shot down and the flight crew taken prisoner.

If you do go, you will find the roads good - no tolls through the tunnels for motorcycles. Fuel reasonable price and available around the islands.

DO IT.

Thanks for the reply - I hope to do it next year. I will take my time probably take 2 weeks holidays. I know the weather can be hit and miss.

Dont forget to call in at the black sheep brewery, we got a very warm welcome, tour, t-shirt and tasting ..............just make sure you camp close by and not in Torshavn as we did. :blast
