The Foam

All,

Having read large sums about the foam at the front of the engine, I bit the bullet and have taken it out to stop any more corrosion. It was a mess under the black plastic cover. However, I just wanted to check that no one has since discovered that the foam is doing something vital.

For those that have not read the other threads, the foam fills up with water and stays wet causing lots of corrosion.

Therein lies the answer to your question, perhaps?

Have you found any threads saying that the removal of the foam creates some problem of its own?

Foam out and re-painted mine over a year ago.

No problems or finger-wagging from BMW dealer.

The BuMW dealers are taking it out.... and no doubt billing for the experience... I'm surprised they did not finger wag because you diddled them out of their corn :D

The boxer engine needs sound-deadening foam like a fish needs a bicycle.

Just bin it and relax.

P.S. Let me know if you can actually tell a difference in sound with it removed.:nenau

Unless BM have stopped fitting this, the dealer must have took it out on Pre Defect Insertion..... cause i ain't got one fitted to my Sept 09 reg. ???

Foam insert not fitted to HP2Es.

No detrimental effect in over 30,000 miles, unless its absense somehow causes premature fork wear or rear drive bearing failure :rob

Do you think your rear drive bearing failure could be related to the fact the seal was leaking when we did the Lllangollen recce? :augie

:D

my worry is that so many people binning the foam may be a significant contributor to rising sea levels

Don't worry it will soak it up. In fact perhaps we have stumbled on a solution to global warming.

My 09 new GSA did not have it as the foam is no longer fitted at the factory for good reason. Get rid!

They still rot without the foam........will that make you worry less?

Is this the same foam that British Leyland used to fit on the inside of door panels specifically to make them rust through to boost new car sales by making you want to get rid of your rusty old model? :augie

How very dare you swear on this site ...... British Leyland!!! i have great affection for the series 1 Allegro. (don't jack it up with all the doors open or the monocoque distorts)
My old 1975 500 four Honda reduced the number on the road by one:toungincheek

Makes you wonder why BMW didn't use closed-cell foam, as used in camping mats. Not expensive, probably better sound-deadening qualities but doesn't absorb moisture.

There are several products now used by the motor industry as sound deadening .... several makers fit what looks like carpet in the wheel arches....No quite up to axminster, but does a triff job at reducing road noise into the cell, its 100% waterproof a stops the corrosion under the arches that has been the industry downfall for decades .... remember all those Mk I escorts with rotted out arches with enough soil underneath for the average allotment..
