The Navigation Wars!

Thank you for your videos which, IMHO, are some of the best out there about these CarPlay units. They are very professional and thorough, unlike others. So few cover how to obtain updates or whether the units can be powered off the bike. The only omission on the Carpuride 702BS unit (Which I have) is that, according to Carpuride, it is completely normal that once you turn the ignition on and the unit fires up, that when you start the bike the unit will close down and restart again, as the voltage drops momentarily then recovers. Are you covering the Chigee AIO-5 and AIO-6 units for BMW?

Thank lad, I appreciate that!!

Actually neither of my devices do that, I do get a "low voltage" message sometimes but they don't powercycle when I turn on the bike. Thus why I didn't mentioned it.

I even have the lithium battery which reads low when you first start the bike and then picks up voltage.

I don't have Chigee units in my hands just yet but I do hope to get some in the near future, I'm still a very tiny channel so it's more challenging to partner up with the bigger brands.

Thanks for watching and your feedback!

You make a good point and I should have been more specific: it appears to happen on the 1250. Mine is a year old now so maybe they've done something to prevent it? You may have gathered that I'm not a technical genius. :ROFLMAO:

It's all good bud, asking is the only way to learn isn't it?

I purchsed the 502 back in July and didn't have that issue either on my 1200. So yeah, maybe they added a capacitor or something like that to hold power for a little bit while the bike starts?? That's the only thing I can think off...

Does your device turn off instantly when you turn off the bike or do you get the 10 second countdown?

Hi folks,

I'm kicking off a video series where I'll be reviewing all the most popular navigation devices for your beemer.

Here's the first one out where I give you my honest and practical review:

Cheers!

Just had one of these delivered today, the Aoocci version, ordered straight from the manufacturer as I figured maybe support would be better if needed without the middle man CPMC

Starts up quickly and seems good, 6” screen suits me

No android support for calimoto or make life a ride app so I guess I’ll be using Google Maps and Waze mainly

Ya, Aoocci make some good devices too as you're right, it's the same as CPMC. Next week I'm reviewing the more powerful Aoocci U6 which is a full blown android tablet, have a few more on the way too.. new players!

You mean no support for Android Auto? that's probably the case.. there's a bunch of apps out there that will be compatible but most will be paid, though not too expensive.

Years ago I got Sygic for offline navigation and it works great. I mostly still use google maps for the convinience but I always have Sygic available if I need to navigate offline.

Cheers!

It stays on for quite a while, then goes off. No countdown. It's easy to work around whilst on the bike.

Ya, you definitely seem to have a different version.

Have you tried updating firmware? See if that gets you the latest? Otherwise, as you mentioned it might be a hardware improvement.

MyRoute app (very good but expensive compared to others) and OSMand+ both follow GPX tracks and work with AA, but OSMand+has a steep learning curve, a years subscription is only £10 though. I bought a lifetime subscription to MyRoute app route planner and navigation app (shame I wasn't 20!) Google maps is great for point to point navigation......never used Waze.

After using Garmin basemap for years to plan trips and hating my life, switching to google maps has been godsend. Easy to share within devices, do a little bit on the computer, switch to the tablet or phone, etc... save the routes whatever, it's so seemless.

Always a matter of taste or whatever suits you best, by no means I'm saying that's the best... just works for me.

Your quite correct about Carpuride having to reboot if has a interruption on the 1200 & 1250 range not sure if the world at large is aware but on the 1300GS this doesn’t happen they appear to have left a delayed supply to the new NAV prep which actually quite helpfull 👍

I was given a Chigee 5 earlier this year and found it a godsend touring France, but for navigation I use various apps
Waze in the UK
Sygic in Europe
Guru (formerly Galileo) for green laning or for making a route via several waypoints

I have MRA but find it a very poor user experience except for the circular route designer for ride outs. In France, it didn’t even show speed camera locations, just ‘areas of high risk’.

That’s for legal reasons, the French government like their radar revenue too much so they made it illegal to indicate their position by gps

The workaround is to indicate areas of high accident risk, as that is the excuse used for the positioning of the radars

Ha! Interesting, didn't know that. Cheeky

…And yet Sygic displays their locations and also has speed limit changes indicated, too. Together with better in-display speedo, it’s why I like Sygic for European navigation

Ya Sygic is excellent, although they do like to rob you features and always come up with a new plan to get more money out of you.

I got the premium package a few years back which was supposed to be lifetime, but then if I wanted Android Auto, I had to pay extra. That's the only downside. Other than that works great

Calimoto is great for speed camera warnings. On a phone, the whole screen flashes red and displays the limit. Best I've seen. I use that and MRA, which is not as good in relation to warnings but IMHO better for route planning and features. Great to hear about others, though. I had a Chigee 5 prior to the Carpuride 7 but the screen was just too small for my ailing eyesight. Great unit.
