The perfect antithesis to a 1200GS

Don't get me wrong, I love my 1200 GS but I've had her over two years now and she's done nearly 50,000 miles so I started thinking it was time for another bike. There was no way I was going to part with the GS so the obvious solution was to get something else to compliment her and run alongside. As I started to ponder this idea the benfits seemed to mount up. I could now prepare for a touring holiday in advance and get the GS washed and polished, panniered up and ready to go days in advance of a tour whilst using the second bike for the daily commute to work. Also if anything does go wrong with the GS (not that she's ever let me down) the second bike would be there waiting to take me to work. Also if I needed to do any work I could do it at my leisure over a few evening without having to rush to get it done for the next ride into work.

So a second bike was the answer but what to get.
It would have to be something that complimented and contrasted the GS so four cylinders would be good but it also had to be practical and cope with the 70 mile round trip into London each day.

I started with a few Icons that I have worshipped over the last few years. First the Triumph Rocket (absolutely fantastic to ride and to look at but not very practical), XJR 1300 (beautiful but handles like a dog), so onto more practical ideas. Hyabusa ( a stunning machine but too uncomfortable for me and too harsh a ride over bumpy roads), and the Fazer 1000 (nice and comfy, good looks, cheap but very revvy). And most of these bikes have the huge disadvantage of having final drives that in my opinion should be used to flush toilets rather than propel motorcycles.

So on Saturday I returned to the BMW fold and tried a K1200 R Sport. What an awesome machine, fantastic riding position, good wind protection, superbly comfy, corners as well as the GS, returns the same 45 mpg, and that engine - so smooth "its like smearing Honey into Kiera Knightly" (as so elgantly put by Mr Clarkson) together with more performance than you could ever use and finally of course a real mans final drive. That smooth silky four is the perfect antithesis to the GS, and I don't have to keep getting used to changing switchgear. I put down a deposit and pick her up on Saturday.

Good decision? Anyone on here got one??

It seems they never sold very well which is why they were discontinued but it seems to me that its because they fill a very small niche in the market rather than becuase of any issue with them. All the write ups i've read seem full of praise.
I notice there is a Laminar Lip which will be one of the first thing on my list together with another TomTom mount so I know where i'm going.

Roll on the weekend :bounce1

K1200S!

Kevmeister,
Like you I am very happy with my GSA but at the beginning of the year I bought a K1200S to sit alongside the GSA.

I think it's probably very similar to your R Sport, same engine at least but different riding postion (bars) and fairing. I absolutely love it! The power and handling are awesome. It will happily pootle along though the fuelling can make it a bit jerky at low speeds(check it's had the latest fuel maps updated) but when you open her up there is very little out there that will keep up apart from the Hayabusa and the big Kwaka.

Long days in the saddle are a pleasure. It's not a GS replacement but......damn close!

Interestingly, I went in the opposite direction.

Had a K1200S and bought my GS to compliment it.

After about 7 months of the K12 not moving I decided that there was no point keeping it as well as the GS and sold it.

Mind you, I have a shoulder problem that makde the K12 uncomfortable after about 2 hours, and that was a big factor in deciding to sell.

There's a pretty good K Series forum that I used to visit quite a lot if you need help and advise.

Very nice

I ride with a friend who has a K1200S. Great bike and he is well pleased with it.

If you are commuting you should be aware OEM headlamp is not good. I struggle to see him in my mirrors when we are out. He is ugrading to HID's.

Cant understand why they never sold loads of these. Never seen a bad write up and I thought of getting one for a while. Couldnt get rid of the GS though and couldnt afford 2 bikes. Must have been the price of them that put buyers off.

or maybe they didn't sell as well because 'The Long Way Round' hadn't made BMW bikes as acceptable as they are now. Theres been a noticable attitude change to BM bikes over the last few years and alot has got to do with those two:thumb2

I had a K1200S for close to 3 years before changing to the 08 GSA. I used the K12 every day for a 50 mile round trip commute, touring, and just having fun! I still think it is a great bike, although had some interesting issues with intermittent ABS brake failure (new ABS/ESA pump and software upgrades under warranty fixed that). If I could accommodate a second motorcycle to the GSA, I would definitely consider a K1200S again....

Personally, the only downside to the K1200S I found was that it just encouraged me to go licence threateningly fast!!

Kev,

I swapped my 12GS for a K12R two years ago...I do 500 miles a week and lot of filtering...The K12R is much easier to filter by a country mile.

Got the dealer to fit my HID kit at the first 600 mile service and its well worth the 100 bucks.

For me 4 cyclinders is a lot smoother than 2 and for me thats important with the miles I commute and its cheaper to service.

I also missed blasting around on good days which you cant really do on GS.

Blasting around in 3 & 4 Gears are fechin awesome & with some Roadsmarts on, I get excellent mileage, to the edge dry grip and confidence in the wet.

Only comment is you do get wind blast...although I think the Sport version is a little better than the R.

Mine is currently sitting in the garage with 40k+ miles on the clock.

Reliability no different from the GS....(lots of warranty work) :bounce1:bounce1

LWR was almost 3 yrs before the release of the K12 Sport and a year before the K12R & S :thumb

I have always fancied an R myslef but the thought of all them ponies scares me and my licence. Never had more than 105bhp before.

Nice bike Kev.........take allok at the belly pan for them too . Smartens up the exhausts quite a bit .
