Well the original plan was to take the Guzzi to the Moto Pistons Rally and I ended taking the TTR600 and due to a slight mechanical hitch (not with my bike) I didn’t get to Santander to see the rally.

On our trip and staying at La Pisa were Cookie, Humvee, Gerry Huxtable, Johnnyboxer, Joybringer, Springer, Oscar, Cookieboy, Darkhorse and me. Staying close by and travelling at the same time as us were Ferret, Mrs Ferret, Wreckdiver and we met a few other GSer’s and Harley riders along the way.

Up early to meet Shaun (Cookieboy) for the ride to Portsmouth. After 50 miles I had abandoned any ideas of riding backup through France on the TTR seat, it needs a recover and I think I’ll be putting a gel insert in for a bit of added comfort!

On the boat and Johnny grabs the bottom bunk.

Arriving in Santander we set off on a 120 mile trash inland to our guest house in the tiny village of Aniezo a few miles to the east of Potes.
La Pisa is an 8 bedroom guest house run by John and Gwen, it is perfect in every way. I had a double bed room, on suite, breakfast and a 3 course evening meal that I chose from the menu after breakfast for just £50 a night. They have a bar, the beds are comfy and the food is fantastic.I really cannot fault this place. Others might point out the lack of wi fi and very poor mobile signal but for me it wasn’t an issue.

It was my first visit to the Picos and I loved the place, fantastic roads, great trails, 30 plus hot and sunny. Its so easy to get to as well and I can see myself going back very soon.

On friday Shaun and I went out looking for a few trails, it would appear that many in the National Park are now closed (technically) to vehicles although its never really clear when you are in the park. I have read ride reports on here many times and wanted to ride long mountain trails where you didn’t see anyone or anything and this place fulfilled all my expectations. Some sections were pretty rocky and others quite steep but on the whole they were perfect especially for my TTR and Shauns R80 mono.

A flavour of what we saw.

After these trails it did go a little Pete Tong for awhile when we found ourselves in the clouds, on bloody rocky tracks about 6 foot wide with a rock face on the right and massive drops on the left, I did feel very slightly out of my comfort zone for a while and was very glad when we met a lone walker in a refuge who told us to avoid our planned exit route and take another that got better after about 4 miles. When we spotted a tiny village way below I must admit I was very relieved knowing there would be a road to join. Still took us 30 minutes to get down to it though zig zagging our way down.

On this ride alone we saw Eagles and Vultures really close.

Just for Mutley.......
On the ferry I had a lovely steak with creme caramel for pud.
Thursday evening I had ham and Melon, baked Panga and honey sponge.
Friday I had chorizio salad, mustard chicken and plum crumble.

More of my holiday tomorrow :)

Saturday was meant to be the day Shaun and I returned to Santander to have a look around the Moto Pistons rally. A fabulous ride down the gorges where there is only ever a maximum of about 50 yards between the bends and a quick blat along the motorway was the plan. Well I wasn’t overly bothered about seeing the rally since they moved it from its base of many years into the city and by all accounts it has suffered a bit. My arse wasn’t fully in tune with the seat, a very slight upset stomach (combination of over eating and an arse spitting shit) and I was almost relieved when Shauns R80 packed up. Shaun wasn’t quite so pleased as he was in the outside lane overtaking two artics, but hey he weaved between the trucks and made it safely onto the hard shoulder. By this time JB and I were stopped a few miles up the road and making calls back to the broken down GSer. It was decided that there was little point in JB’s day being spoit so I sent him on his way to the rally and he was going to hunt out some electrical bits and bobs. I bought a very expensive tow rope and headed back down to the previous junction and learnt how to tow a bike off the roadside.

Mention here for Ferret who was the only bike out of about 40 (many Brits) that stopped to assist Shaun on the hard shoulder and that was before he realised who it was. I asked one Brit rider in the service area how far back Shaun was and he said “oh about 2 miles, he has the seat and tank off” ... didn’t think about stopping then?

Shaun was a tad p*ssed off but we kept our spirits up having a laugh, excepting that these things happen and making the most of our few hours on the side of the road.

Spanish motorcycle girlie was quite friendly and we even borrowed some leads from the forecourt and popped the bonnet on a Civil Gaurd patrol car for a jump start. Very bad helmet hair day.

Spain2011090.jpg

We decided we needed to be on the other side of the motorway so rode and pushed the bikes over the footbridge.

Spain2011091.jpg

The others arrived back just in time to see the Airhead take up the 1200 position.
Oscar was great being able to talk to the recovery truck driver and company insuring we got recovered to the hotel.

Spain2011092.jpg

All in all a bit of a wasted day but I had a fabulous ride back up the gorges, towed a bike with a bike for the first time, scared the shit out of two gun carrying coppers when the bike back fired and by the end of the day my arse felt much better.

For tea I had Sea bass and Pavlova (not together).

On sunday whilst a few went off for a longer ride Shaun, JB, Gerry, Darkhorse, Springer and I stayed local, did just 40 or so miles, visited a local market or fair, rode the 'road of cheese' and sat around eating and drinking in the sunshine.

Springer and Darkhorse enter the spirit of the week with two lovely bikes.

And back to La Pisa for evening drinks.

Spain2011130.jpg

Tea today was Hake and white wine cheesecake, can't remember what I had for a starter.

On Monday we waved goodbye to Oscar, Cookie, Darkhorse and Springer who were heading home.

Bye bye Guzzi.

Spain2011082.jpg

Gerry, Humvee and Joybringer went for a 3 day blast to the Pyrenees whilst JB, Shaun and I stayed on at La Pisa enjoying a relaxed pace. Nice aloso to catch up with ralphy and Banksy who were staying in the area on their Harleys. Shaun and I also rode a really lovely trail later in the afternoon as the tempreture got a bit cooler and the sun started to go down. Fabulous.

Curried prawn and crab salad, Halibut and apple tart.

Tuesday we had a lovely little ride out to the top of the bear trail, mooched about a bit, chatted to some folk camping up there in their VW campers and Shaun and I rode down the Bear trail backdown the mountain which was really good. Apparently the day before the Police had beeen up there nicking people for it so I guess we timed it right :)

Tea was black pudding with apple, baked Panga again and Panacota .... yum yum

On Wednesday Shaun, JB and I headed back upto the coast and on to meet the others at Santander for the crossing back to Plymouth.

The Picos were everything and more than I expected, so close and easy to get too I will certainly go again.

The holiday was just what I wanted, a really relaxing time with lovely people, great food and drink and a real laugh.

Thank you to Steve and Cookie for putting it together, JB, Shaun, Gerry, Oscar, Mark, Dave and Springer for your great company and I look forward to another trip down that way in 2012 :beerjug:

Right now I need to find a job.

Good one Trippy, it looks like you all had a great time.:clap

I love that track over to Sotres, been there a couple of times when it was blocked though:blast

Looks like you had a good time. Did the trails meet your expectations? It looks like you went on the ones I marked on the map I sent you, but they do all look the same after a while ie it doesn't matter which ones you do they are all stunning.:thumb2

Great report. Can't work out how I missed it before now.

stunning scenery and good comaraderie. :thumb2

The Triumph looks awesome but for some odd reason those older BM's are really starting to grow on me ........

Thanks and yes Johnnyboy the map was very useful thanks.

I maybe didn't do as many trails as I may have liked too but I'm not worried about that because it leaves lots to be explored next time. To be honest I've decided I'm probably not really that much of a knarly adventurer and I have no ambitions to cover hundreds of miles a day on or off the road. This area suited me perfectly being easy to get too, great roads, nice tracks and lots of bars and cafes to sit around in each day. I think whether I go back to the Picos next spring or try the Pyrenees my ideal holiday is nice breakfast, decent trails for a couple of hours, long lunch, few more trails, nice evening meal, few cold beers, shower and a comfy bed.

Great report trippy nice to see the TTR in action
I know what you mean about the seat it's nicer than the dr 350 though
I also think we have the same idea of a holiday bike beer and a bed :beerjug:

As soon as I got the bike home after buying from you (and apparently because it lives outside) the blue part of the seat went really shitty and horrible. I have taken it to be recovered today and he is going to build it up 3/4 inch so it'll be interesting to see what I get back.

Bike went really well although I do have a slight issue with fuel starvation after really bumpy uphill tracks sometimes, I think it maybe the floats bouncing. However it only did it down there a couple of times when I was really high and when I pulled the choke out half way it cured it completely. Maybe it just needs richening up a bit.

Maybe jetting, I was going to put a second petcock on it as well
Altitude may have affected jetting though I never took it higher than leith hill :D
The HUBB is good place for info on them
