OK, I swore to myself I wouldn't turn this into a rant nor a witch-hunt, but I'm hoping there's a member of the force on here who can provide a bit of sane clarity...:bobby

Why am I beginning to turn against our boys in blue....? On more than a few occasions recently I've been really frustrated by their behaviour on the road.

Does anyone know the answer to this one......"..can the Garda drive 'beyond the law' on occasions when NOT in hot persuit - ie with blues and twos a-going.."? or are they to all intends and purposes beyond the law?

Three recent ones - all when I was in the cage and minding my own business.
1. Unmarked car well over the speed limit pushing other car drivers out of lane (to avoid causing head-on..). I eventually twigged it was in 'hot persuit' when he then flashed his secreted blue lights. - surely if in persuit in this manner he is legally supposed to have blue lights going?

2. "Unmarked" car (I know this one well from the streets of Waterford) en-route towards Dublin on N9 (I was behind him for 40km at this stage) regularly overtaking on double/solid white lines. I would have thought he was in a hurry, but no, he stayed within speed limits. What I thought strange was that when a guy ahead of him decided to overtake on a ghost island near Carlow the cop took no action. Is this just too petty an incident for him to bother with? I cant avoid thinking that because he wasn't obvious on the road, he didn't feel obliged to enforce the law. I dont doubt that if he chose to, he would have done so - is this the 'discretion' he should be using ??

3. Today on the new road out of Waterford (50kmph zone) marked Traffic Corp jeep overtaking (in outer lane) but well above the limit but no blue lights flashing. I accelerated to see if I could keep pace (ableit 500m back...) and backed off when touching 90.....Why do they do this - because he can?

Perhaps I see more of this that the average driver (I do c45K km pa in the cage) and I know for a fact that some of the guys on here will call me plonker/square etc, but surely this 'one-rule-for-them-and-a-different-one-for-us" shite can only alienate the Guards - whom I generally have a lot of respect for......and I have for for a brother in law(but dont see him often - I'll be asking him!).

Are they beyond the law - stupid question, or not?:duno

From what i've been told, the traffic corps are a law unto themselves. Ordinary gaurds on the beat aren't in love with them either. As i say, this is just what i've been told. 99.9% of my doings with the non traffic lads have been extremely positive. Great bunch of people.

Any relations I have in the Guards do consider themselves above the law....after all who is going to punish them?

As regards driving on the wrong side of solid white lines, I am a paramedic, and am not allowed to cross them (bar a couple of very limited exceptions). It's just too likely to cause a serious accident.

Anyway, sure most of the country are driving with no understanding of the rules of the road and no respect for fellow motorists at any time...ie no indicators, pulling over to the RIGHT to let emergency services pass them on the left even when on a dual carriageway!!!!!!!!!!:rob

I'll stop now.....the red spots are starting to appear before my eyes!!

Depends... Wifey had a near miss a couple of weeks back with an unmarked being driven - as she saw it - in a dangerous manner without lights or siren. Having thoroughly tested her reflexes and the ABS of both vehicles, the Gardai made off again, but this time with lights and siren ablare.

Doubtless they know that if there was a crash, the ombudsman would be in there investigating straight away.

There's good and bad in all walks of life, and I don't think there's any point in getting upset over it. For all we know, the driver pulling overtakes on the double whites may have had an operational reason for doing so, even if only to keep another vehicle in sight.

Why not give them the benefit of the doubt, use a little discretion and carry on your merry way without getting stressed out? Works for me :thumb

Yea, good advice............I drive enough to not suffer from road rage and have learned to let lots of things 'slide' so its no bother really.

With the Garda, I know I'd like to see them upload the law that they enforce, and not risk alienating folks - they seem to forget that they are there to serve us. I know too that they have a tough job and dont need to be hamstrung with silly rules, but it seems to be the case that double-standards are the order of the day with them.......

I'm not one for the whole PC thing, but most other Police organisations have rebranded themselves as police services, whereas the Gardai are still known as a police force. Possibly part of the mind set?
There's definitely been a shift in attitudes among people I know towards them :rob (40 somethings mostly)...

traffic corps are hard to take, ruthless ba****s,no give and take there. Most of the other bizzies are fair enough and cant fault them.Considering the resources they have their doing a good job.Once they dont abuse their position we cant complain too much.

If i may clarify

We have "An Garda Siochana" , in the Republic Ireland.
In Lots of other European Countries THEY have Police.

The Logic is quite simple. We DONT have police , We have
"An Garda Siochana".

Police = a group that enforces the law and provides security = An Garda Síochána (Irish for guardians of the peace).
Therefore Garda = police, quod erat demonstrandum .

I am not a Garda , nor have i any great time for the Outfit in general terms , my sole qualm is the degree of accountability. I have to say , that a good degree of the ""Run away"" mentality is our own fault, as a people ,because we generally accecpt the behaviour . If i may , Vireo , you tell all of us about your Experiances , but did you make a note of the infringments and report them ?. I reckon not , so again it goes unreported , so who would blame them for their behavouir. I Must say though that their P.R. Man is a Joke and needs the Boot , the recent debacle in Dublin being a point , for the "Look" of the Force alone, they shoulda threw the book at the Copper involved. {just an opinion} If they need a Direction , they need look no further than the P.S.N.I , these boys are making serious strides in ""Community"" policing and are ""Almost too Accountable"" or p.c.
The Gardai are not above the Law , they are enforcers of it.
As with any big outfit ,, there will be "Genuine" people,
And there will be a percentage of ****ers , this is pretty much
the norm.

Instead ,letting the Rotten small minority ruin the keg for them
all , you should take a note and drop the details with your
local Gardai . They will Act on it. They have to .

Are the Garda not a police force?
The logic of your contribution (if any) escapes me.

The Gardai are part of what we are as an individual nation.

translated means "guard(ians)of the peace of ireland.

Correct .
