OK, I swore to myself I wouldn't turn this into a rant nor a witch-hunt, but I'm hoping there's a member of the force on here who can provide a bit of sane clarity...
Why am I beginning to turn against our boys in blue....? On more than a few occasions recently I've been really frustrated by their behaviour on the road.
Does anyone know the answer to this one......"..can the Garda drive 'beyond the law' on occasions when NOT in hot persuit - ie with blues and twos a-going.."? or are they to all intends and purposes beyond the law?
Three recent ones - all when I was in the cage and minding my own business.
1. Unmarked car well over the speed limit pushing other car drivers out of lane (to avoid causing head-on..). I eventually twigged it was in 'hot persuit' when he then flashed his secreted blue lights. - surely if in persuit in this manner he is legally supposed to have blue lights going?
2. "Unmarked" car (I know this one well from the streets of Waterford) en-route towards Dublin on N9 (I was behind him for 40km at this stage) regularly overtaking on double/solid white lines. I would have thought he was in a hurry, but no, he stayed within speed limits. What I thought strange was that when a guy ahead of him decided to overtake on a ghost island near Carlow the cop took no action. Is this just too petty an incident for him to bother with? I cant avoid thinking that because he wasn't obvious on the road, he didn't feel obliged to enforce the law. I dont doubt that if he chose to, he would have done so - is this the 'discretion' he should be using ??
3. Today on the new road out of Waterford (50kmph zone) marked Traffic Corp jeep overtaking (in outer lane) but well above the limit but no blue lights flashing. I accelerated to see if I could keep pace (ableit 500m back...) and backed off when touching 90.....Why do they do this - because he can?
Perhaps I see more of this that the average driver (I do c45K km pa in the cage) and I know for a fact that some of the guys on here will call me plonker/square etc, but surely this 'one-rule-for-them-and-a-different-one-for-us" shite can only alienate the Guards - whom I generally have a lot of respect for......and I have for for a brother in law(but dont see him often - I'll be asking him!).
Are they beyond the law - stupid question, or not?
