How many police bikes do you deal with, whole fleets, or just the odd one or two ??. And if you haven't heard of valve or head problems ( they're fitting heads from a different model ;)) they're doing a good job of keeping it quiet, as they were hoping .
Let me clear this up for all you who dont know what is going on.
It first came to light on the R1200RTP in california late last year as they took delivery of the first 2007/8 models then followed by the UK police forces It then took the factory a little time to work out what was going wrong after investigation it was found that the software for the engine was the cause of the problem they changed it to make the bike ready for euro4 emmisions. The factory have since changed the software which has now been installed into most police bikes so there should not be any more failures it also affected some customer bikes which when failed had the engines changed and software updated. All bikes produced from about july 2007 need this update including GS and GSA, We at Vines have now just had software service station installed so we can program these bikes alot quicker as at the moment on GT1 it takes around an hour but with SSS it takes about 20 mins so please call in with your reg number so we can check if your bike needs doing and we will book it in.

RTP's are still being recalled and having the software upgrade. These are bikes that have not been on fleet for long.

Question is: Are privately owned 1200's being recalled or being left to go bang/left to owners seeing a thread such as this?

The Dealers should be sending out letters for this work to be carried out at the request of BMW(UK) if you have not got one please call your local dealer to see if the service action campaign is required on you model.
