The Taming of an R90S?

After a bit of research I think I have a /5 hub, drilled for lightness (cooling? the back brake was never really used on the track!).

Well, after all the hub excitement I decided to have a brief pause before fitting the engine electrical (ignition) stuff and do a stock take. This required taking her off the ramp. All other electrical stuff working and tested. So here she is blinking in her negligé in the early March sunshine.

New coils needed to be bought (I got the Endurolast from Motorworks) as my Andrews Products were only 1.5 Ohm across the pair (needed 3 Ohm). I've now fitted, timed and wrapped up the jobs: Service (engine oil, filter, gearbox oil, shaft and bevel oil, brake fluid, need to check air filter); Charging System (600W Alternator with uprated diode board); and Ignition System (Endurolast EDL 310). I even wired in a satnav mount. Took her out for 20 miles last night and need to balance the carbs but other than that she's running very well. So well I swapped the R90S back onto the ramp last night and fitted the ignition system to that, too!

Pictures to be resumed in due course! Here's one of the RS standing out at the Old Sarum bike night (first one of season last night).E9568FFD-1032-496B-BE1A-CD5F32AA44E0.JPG

A bit of progress to report. After wheeling her back onto the ramp I set about installing the crank-mounted ignition system. This is a system I've had for a while, a prototype from Boyer Brandsen (cue threatening, imposing music) which has always worked well. Here is the timing disc on the alternator:

The sensor cables from the small unit in the 10 o'clock position go up through the normal route to a standard Boyerr unit I mounted here:

I then set about installing the Dellortos, Airbox, filter, breather tube, driveshaft connection, final fit on the exhausts and a few general items as can be seen:

So now looking at fitting a cover on the seat foam / base assembly and moving forward to install the brakes and connect the cables to the throttle assembly. It's getting awfully close!

Phew, nearly slipped off the front page! Just a quick update in that progress has been a little slow of late (mainly due to a couple of holidays) and then all of a sudden quite quick. Tonight I torqued up the front end and with the handlebars removed I put the S Fairing on (I hate pulling it over the indicators) and stuck the headlight rubber gasket thingi on. All the brackets are on and the handlebars back on.

I'm using a spare tank to provide the fuel for test-running the engine (oh, did I mention I have had it running?) and have now done the valve clearances, fine-tuned the timing and set the carbs on the bench. I know they will need doing again once I've taken her round the block. Once that's done I'll swap in the real tank and put the side panels on and then she'll be ready to give me all the little issues you get once you think you are finished!

More pictures to follow soon.

The teething problems I found on the extensive trips out for coffee today were limited to the horn falling off (forgot to tighten the mounting nut doh) but left dangling on its cables (phew) (and now firmly bolted on) and an oil leak from the oil pressure sender (luckily I had a spare) which is now fixed. I had to come home at some stage today but it was tempting just to keep going and going; she's a lovely mover!

Congratulations, that is absolutely beautiful. Great that we have this dry weather so you can ride it a bit.

Well, this bike is now for sale as I already have one ("what's going on here, then" thread) so after precisely 10 years of ownership and a lot of fun, she's available for someone else to enjoy....
