You lads seem to be the ones to ask the following. Please help as I'm considering buying one of these Dalesman over here in Ireland.

I'm on a learner permit and so would not qualify to ride the bike on its own (without getting an aftermarket restriction, which I don't want to do). Our regulations in Ireland seem to match your own in the UK in terms of 33bhp/25kw/0.16kw/kg. My questions are:

Am I allowed to include the weight of the sidecar in determining if the bike can be ridden (without aftermarket restriction)? Clearly, the 40bhp of the Dalesman is above the legal level but can the third method of calculation (i.e. power-to-weight ratio) supercede the other two limits in determining this?

Also, to calculate this, what weight is the Dalesman - both separately and with sidecar)?

Finally, do you happen to know if someone in Ireland on a learner permit can take a sidecar passenger in any event?

Thanks for any help you can provide with this - nobody in the Irish authorities seems to know this!

It`s a bit of a 'Thread Hijack' posting your lengthy questions here but I`ll try to help.

I don`t know any of your laws,so can only refer to how things are over here,by the way.

Both 650 and 750 Ural are legal to ride as a learner.

You can do your CBT on one but only at a sidecar-qualified establishment.

You can then ride it on the road on L plates....but NOT carry ANY pasengers.

However,there then arises a big legal glitch which I`m proposing to try and fight even if it has to go to European law courts.......

Once you`ve passed your CBT you cannot take the road part of the test on a combo unless "You have a physical impediment making it impractical to do so on a solo machine".

I think this is due to a lack of combo experienced Test Examiners but nevertheless it is discrimination against those who do NOT have a "physical impediment" and that to me makes it illegal.

I found this out because Glambabe has no interest in riding a solo but she was interested in doing the test on one of my Urals in order to only ever ride a combo.

As I said,I know nothing about laws over on your side.

For the weights of the sidecar and the machine as a solo you`ll have to search the specs on the `net or phone a Dealer (again,look on the `net) as I`m not going to piss about weighing mine.

Hope at least some of the above may help.

Glad you enjoyed the hotel in Bouillon. I have stayed there several times. Whilst not cheap-cheap, it's a nice place to stay and overall not bad value at all. It is of course a great hub town for exploring that part of the Ardennes, too.
