Theft claim process?

To insure my bike without declaring i have a garage the premium goes up by £500
So you can understand why many lie about having one.

I built a brick garage myself for £2k back in 2012, my thinking was that over 4 years its paid for itself.

I'm no saint, but it's something that 100% the insurer will discover in event of a theft claim.
I'd rather insure without theft cover at that stage... even though most insurers do not allow that because of "higher risk". Of what is unclear since they don't have to pay out anything in event of theft :D

now that is interesting.

so if you lie and say you have a garage, to get cheaper theft cover, and your bike is stolen from somewhere else....they won't pay out?
Fair point, I was just mentioning it. Why would they not ask before the theft when taking out the insurance. I do have the garage that wasn't my point :D

You all seem to assume Pepsie's bike was at or by his home when it was stolen, and that he does not in fact have a garage....I did not read his post(s) that way.

Am I mistaken?
I indeed have a garage and have shared the pics with insurance - but it was stolen on the street during the morning.

Good luck with the claim mate.
Ideally you will get your bike returned without a scratch, if not then i hope the insurance sorts you out.

Feckin thieving scroats everywhere!

Is this scary (urban-myth) that if you are at home, the bike has to be in the aforementioned garage.... at least overnight? A bit like breakdown cover where you have to be half a mile from home to be rescued (if you don't have home start) and yes I have moved a broken car to meet the criteria......but I live in dull flatsville.

A lot of possibilities that only Pepsie and his insurers will be discussing but still a shitter and my sympathies to you for having some cock-gobbling thunder-cnut take your bike

I checked and checked with mine, yes it has to be garaged, if at home ;) also wont be insured if you are home and stolen off your drive, well it will be as long as you arent storing it there. so if you get it out, pop back in becauuse you forgot your gloves, and some cvnt has it away, youre still covered.

Hi all -

My s1000XR just got stolen this morning. Im insured with Ageas and wondering if anyone has gone through a theft claim before?

I just rang them and they asked for a load of info, gave all of it, then said a loss handler will call me and I need to have my last MOT certificate ready and the last V5C.
My GS LC was stolen from my front garden around 5 years ago.

Dealing with the insurers agent was relatively straight forward. Just needed to send through images of the chain, anchor, cut link, both keys, V5, receipt. Then I had a 10 minute telephone conversation (or lie detector test, as Steptoe described it) going through the sequence of events etc. The insurer made a fair offer - £1,400* less than I paid for it, with another 17k miles on the clock. There were accessories not covered as not declared - Nav 6 & helmet in top box etc.

The real kick in the bollocks was the £2k excess*, and insurance rising from £600 to £1,600 and then 6 months later I was knocked off and insurance was £2,200 - both bikes were later GS's. EN1 postcode.

Was with Axa at the time.

alot of theives now take the locks if they are nicking from garages, usually to order.

i live in london and cancelled my theft cover three years ago, due to price (no garage)

thats one advantage of having a deeply unwanted bike worth F.A.

Ok I lied :D

Not a myth.
My bikes have to be garaged if within 300 yards from the designated garage place on the contract otherwise they are not covered - day or night.

But depends on the insurer, previous contract covered them even if I kept them parked outside my place (my garage is at a different address, close by – 580 meters as the crow flies :D ).

But really depends from insurer to insurer.

Also
Many bikes are sold with data tag and frames stickerd to announce this
Insurer condition for a successful claim for theft is that the bike must be registered with datatag
I assumed when I bought my new gs the dealer would do this
How wrong was I!
When I read the T&Cs on first renewal something made me want to check so I contacted Datatag and spoke to a very helpful chap who clarified the situation and we went thru rigmarole of actual registration and he sent me required certificate
But I was at risk for the first year when loss would have hurt the most
Yet another way the insurer could avoid payment
I suppose I could have tried a claim against dealer for not fully supplying as per contract of sale
Still feel a potential bullet dodged there!
