There must be a better way!

You keep getting it wrong :D

Yet you don't explain why/in what way I'm wrong?

Am I wrong just because the OP has an 1100 and my answer applied to the 1150? That's already been pointed out - the OP didn't say he had an 1100.

Anyway, I'm right as far as my bike is concerned :D

I was curious about Cat Code jumper settings VS. O2 sensor and I think I sorted a bit of this out. I plugged a GS-911 in and noticed with Steptoe’s mod or the yellow factory plug that the O2 sensor output varies up and down as expected at idle and at any RPM with the bike on the center stand. With no cat code plug installed I see the O2 sensor varying up and down at only idle, at anything above idle the GS-911 shows the O2 sensor going to a high value and flat lining there until you go back to idle – I believe this means that above idle the O2 sensor is being ignored and the pre-programmed fuel mapping are being used.

The AdvRider posting is about the 1150, not the 1100. But OK, what this is suggesting is that a yellow CCP or the 'Steptoe mod' will switch the ECU to running in open-loop mode at anything other than idle, while without a CCP it probably also runs in closed-loop mode at small throttle openings and in the lower end of the rev range (perhaps up to around 2,750 or so).

So explain (please) why there is more than one CCP/jumper setting for the 1150? Just for different ignition maps?

The rocker end play fixed the surging

Far more likely is that the valve clearance adjustment following the end float adjustment made the difference. OK, if the end float is WAY out then it may mean the valve clearances don't stay spot on but I have trouble believing that end-float adjustment alone will cure surging.

I had help from a friend who designs fuel injection systems ( early vauxhall and corvette being two of his examples), that's designs, not improves or messes about with what others have done, but designed to work in everyday everyman examples in run of the mill engines at affordable prices for manufactures to produce. Far harder work than designing one off or smaller batch systems where money or longevity and everyday use isn't a consideration.

I've had a chuckle over the years at all the bollox posted about what's actually happening when different links are used. And i know why links work on some bikes and not others, that why i've always simply said "try it and see", and thats all you need to know or to do.

Are you willing to share this knowledge? Or are you keeping schtum just for your continued amusement?

It's info that's 5 years old - there's enough confusion caused just by me mentioning the ONE link that can have an effect. Can you imagine if i posted everything ( most of it isn't of any use to the average fiddler).

Every internet mechanic ( internet mechanic = has never actually done the job he writes about, just read about it on a website) would be posting it all over the internet with no actual understanding of what the hell they're posting ( there's few good examples in just this one thread :D).

I wished i'd just used the link myself and shut up about it. But i thought it would be helpful, as it has been for a hell of a lot of people and all at no expense for them.

As i've always said - the link doesn't have any effect on an 1100 ( you can remove ccp plugs and get it running different but thats something completely different).
It's not a link for using only with a Y piece and remus as so many seem to think, it has nothing to do with the exhaust system you use.
And as i've always said "try it and see". if it works, great, if it doesn't it hasn't cost you anything.
It's very simple, it's only people that make it confusing. :D:D

Yeah but I'd end up with 1 1/4 SU's cos that what I can get off my mates, and then I'd have to work out what to do with the leccy ignition!!!!

How in gods name did you fill the big hole in the fuel tank, fit a tap to supply carbs, make sure the ignition worked etc..............................

Crap didn't see the second page!

I didn't realise i'd stirred a hornets nest, I personally like the injection as its solid and simple and not affected by things like attitude of the bike.

But due to the wear on the bike and the old style injection it ain't always very smooth.

I was asking about the diagnostics because they are so common for cars and all bikes are going to go this way whether we like it or not.

P.S. Due to the age and apparent neglect (dirt hides a multitude of sins), I wasn't about to start on an expensive rebuild of the GS in the forseeable future, rather just run it and see how tough it really is!

Oh and I'm firmly in the tinkerer and fiddler camp
