There once was an ugly duckling - The tale of D468ABL

I too am interested in the new fairing... do you have a photos of it? I bet its going to be fantastic once its finally all done.

No I haven't,I've not seen it myself yet. Richie says it looks great!!, Bloody hope so,it's fitted to my bike. All I know is that it takes a decent 7.5" ( I think) headlight which is available off the shelf. With the HPN one, apparantly you can't get a replacement light unit for it as it's out of production, and it looks a bit ugly now,but of it's time. I'll be posting pics of the final build as soon as I get sight of the thing.

Things move slowly in Moorespeed land, but at last I've had the last delivery of goodies from Richie and have assembled the beast. I've some final wiring of the rear lights and the speedo to the BMW loom, replace the fork springs for stronger ones, fill it with oil then press the button and see what happens. It's been a long and expensive road, but I think the results are well worth it.

Gorgeous :thumb2

Rear wheel/tyre looks a bit skinny to my eyes, but I'm no airhead fan normally :nenau

If it's cost you less (or the same even ) as a new toilet, I reckon it's a good job :thumb2

Lovely Bike
but...HOW LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unless I'm missing something, The specialist rebuild time scale would be unacceptable to me, god knows what it must have cost and hopefully its up to your expectations.

Hi JB, I've got a tool box, deep one, (not in the photo) to go under the seat which reaches to the bottom of the battery, this will keep the crud off the back of the bike, plus I'm going to make up a full mudguard to keep all the crap out once everything else is in place. There are lots of things I'll want to do to it once I start using it, there always is. That's part of the fun.

I daren't add up what I've spent so far, as it's been over the last 5 years, but If I was doing it today, I rekon to the spec I have here with the same % of new parts , and Moorespeed parts, you'd be looking at £ 16-18k including the donor bike. Certainly not cheap, but a very special bike. I've built this bike to a spec, not to a budget, there's a difference.

The rear tyre is a skinny 120, what it came with as a knackered 80G/S, I'm leaving it on until Richie has set it up on the dyno, then I'll be fitting a 140. No point in trashing a new tyre on the dyno runs.

Sounds good and looks gorgeous

Yes, the headlight fairing is Richie's own design, my bike was the guinea pig. He had to get a design he liked, then make a mould, then build a frame to fix it to the bike , then find a headlight to fit AND be a decent light. It took many months of faffing around until the final version was assembled. Once he'd done that, he had to design and fabricate a dashboard to fit the speedo and gubbins to,again, my bike was the prototype for this. One of the reasons for the time it has taken to build. There's still lots of small jobs to do, but it's a labour of love so I'm happy with taking my time finishing it.

:beerjug: Glad it wasn't just my eyes then :)

That's not the norm from moorespeed. Everything I've had done or have bought has been turned round in very quick time. Even machined parts have been very quick to arrive.

Hi Rob, that's been my only gripe with the bike, Richie started my bike before he was "discovered" and ever since, he has been so busy doing work for other folk, my bike has constantly been put on the back burner. He hasn't the time for complete bikes any more and the development work on so many components on mine kept being put off as it was time consuming and not going to generate income for him. I understand the reasons, but has made it so frustrating. I am waiting for him now to give me probably 2 hours of his time, there are 2 jobs I need him to finish, so I can fire it up, but I left messages for him 2 weeks ago and no response so far. He tends to try to do works in batches, so if he is building engines, he'll do several at a time, same with head work etc, so one off jobs get put off. Anyways, it is close to 100% completion, and that is all that matters.

Probably myself and (especially) Ras Thuro taking up all of his time :D

I know the stuff that's been done for me isn't in the same league as yours but everything I've had done or bought has turned up exactly when Richard said it would. The only delay was from dellorto when they only had left hand carbs available. That was only one weeks delay while they cast some right hand carbs.

Lovely bike though Shurv. I can't wait to see and hear it.

Rob, I promised a long time ago to bring it up and let you have a go on it, and I'll do just that. I plan to ride it up to it's 2 previous owners, Mick DB1 and Tarka, so they can see what their "old " bike has turned into. I'm really pleased with what I have, albeit about 2 to 3 years after I had wanted it. It's going to be my last bike, I can't see anything that'd replace it. The 1200 series has left me cold, as has the 1250 range, so more than ever, I am pleased that I have invested in my old airhead. I went to the NEC in December, and nothing there would make me change my mind. Modern bikes are rubbish, no character or sense of theatre.

Weird as it is Marcus I am selling the bike I swapped you that one for on Wednesday
that bike of yours is just stunning and a credit to yer patience
Are yer still going to ride across Morrocco and the Sahara on it then
Or going to get sensible and doo something like the graded trails of Andalucia (come we me in June if yer want after Sids doo)
A Very Happy New Year for you eh !!!!
Will you be attending the Airhead weekend in Devon ???
Proff would love that in the "Woods of Sid"

Would love to that here for Airhead Wee kend.:)

We will set up a gentle route around the woods suitable for a bit of airhead off-roading. It is all grassland and trees so no rocks to damage the bikes.

It would be nice to see some decent airheads being used as intended. Don't worry about getting them dirty we have facilities to clean them up afterwards.:)
