There once was an ugly duckling - The tale of D468ABL

I was going to buy a new 1200 Adventure with all the bits on, but decided to spend my wad on my airhead. I'm still spending............

There will be thousands of 12GSA's about, all dull....................but your creation (with the help of Moorespeed) will be more or less unique

Hope you're pleased with the final result, mega tricked Monolevers.........they're an acquired taste

Looks lovely:thumb

I hope I like the end result JB, but If I don't, there are plenty of people wanting full spec airheads like mine.Moorespeed has two complete bike orders on the go right now as has plenty of enquiries from guys wanting to compete in desert rallies on airheads. Mine is being built to desert rally spec ,but will be a road bike mainly as I gave up off roading a few years ago following a nasty head on car smash ( I broke both forearms, wrists and a few fingers) so I'm confident I'd get a big chunk of my cash back if I hate the thing. I can't see it though, and my aim is to build a "bike for life" as I find modern stuff too boring. I can't wait for the 1st ride.

If I have another airhead special...................it will be a Moorespeed

Your bike has got me salivating

I would like to ride a full spec one to see how they ride on the road, miy Monolever special was simply awesome on the dirt (Wreford has it now).............but it was not so good on the road

I'd like to see if the Moorespeed special could be developed into more of an allrounder, however we're all different and what suits one person, may not suit another

I had a 100PD, with an uprated chassis (Ohlins shock and springs, plus HE front brake) and thought it was a pile of ****, after the Monolever special in terms of power

I'm looking forward to your final result:bounce1

JB, I've offered Rob Farmer a go on it ,so if our paths cross at a meet/event,you're welcome to have a go too. I've specced it for fast road and the Wilbers has been specced for this too. To put it into full offroad spec would only require a change of rear shock and a fiddle with the forks and change of tyres. I've retained the bings (40mm from 32mm) for torque, but a swap to Kehin CR would release about 7/8 hp at the wheel more, but lose some torque. It'll rev to about 9,250 comfortably and Moorespeed are working on an electronic replacement for the bean can to enable more revs. I can't wait to see the dyno runs when we get it there (hopefully 1st week in Dec).

This is very impressive stuff, I can only whince at the thought of how much this is costing you:eek: but I love the direction this is taking you.:thumb2

Apart from the yellow bevel-box, I can't believe ourTarquin is responsible for that.

The yellow bevel box wasn`t my doing.:rob

(It used to be purple :D )

Nor was that wiring.

The bike was my first ever BMW bought a long long time ago (about 1995 I think) in Monmouth as a stock R80g/s.

It had been lightly damaged in an off and alsoneeded a head gasket and a few other jobs doing, and with just a Haynes manual and some common sense,I sorted all it needed and used it as it was for a while.

Then after seeing the original 'Desert Storm' bike I was wowed and inspired to build my own special.

D468 ABL was stripped down and I made a 4" higher rear subframe, stainless headers and collector with a modded CCM 4" alloy tailpipe,a modded DTR 41mm front end (and later a twin disc XTZ 43mm one),Akront rims on stainless spokes taking the original 2.25" rear rim to a 2.5" one,Acerbis 45l tank, twin headlamp GPz fairing,Polisport mudguards, etc etc....and thus was born the Mark One LegoBike.

It was in eyeballs earing bright yellow with KTM purple seat, gaiters and bevel box.

The bike was used hard for many years, then at about 80,000 miles (I seem to remember) it got a bit tired with suspected blowback and a stripped cylinder stud (2nd time).

I`d kind of lost interest in it and my free time/space equation wasn`t favourable...so I bought another R80G/S off DrAlf (a nice blue twin disc Spanish Import with very low miles)...and swapped all my special stuff onto this newer bike.
This then became the scary bright lime green and Red Mark Two LegoBike which Nickct now owns.

Then I made a mostly complete (but needing attention) stock bike out of D468 ABL,which Mick DB1 bought off me and got sorted out, changing it into what was nicknamed 'R Kid'. :D

This latest incarnation of the old girl is looking good.

Nice one. :thumb2

Under the yellow paint on the bevel box was also red and purple paint!! The old girl had certainly a hard life, but is being brought back to better than new and will be on the roads for many years to come. Cost me an arm and a leg so far,but will be worth every penny spent. It's going to go like a greased weasel when finished,I can't wait. It's going back to Moorespeed at the end of the month for the handmade exhaust and a few other bits of fabrication, then final painting of the tank and plastics and the remaining bits n bobs to get it running ( final wiring and cables etc) so a Xmas prezzie for me.:D

Good on you, must be excited :beerjug: Don't forget the pics!

oh come on you can't finish it there ... I thought this was going to be a 24hr, ground up, start to finish rebuild ...are you saying we have to wait until christmas for the rest

true inspiration indeed !! :thumb

now I know why Richie M is difficult to tie down ... he's spending all his time working on YOUR bike

I loved that bike - I used to call it "R Kid"
OK it wernt no Cherril Cole, but it went wherever I wanted to go and over or though anything
Once thrashed off a rear TKC in just over a thousand miles - most of that was on a Scottish trip with the BTBC :augie
Wish I hadnt selt it now but Marcus did say I could have it back for the same price if ever I wanted it back !!!!!!!
Well I think thats what he said :D
It does look stunning and I am sure it will go like stink when its done
Still painting it Purple are you ??????
Good luck with the rest of it Mate :thumb2 :clap

9,250 - anything have to be done to the valve train to sustain this level of revs?

Nothing other than very careful building of the valve gear, and Richie's own design of valves made of unobtanium of some sort. Moorespeed are getting higher revs out of their race engines but are limited by the bean can.Richie Moore is working on an electronic version so he can have a higher rev ceiling. The main issue with high revs is vibration, but with the crank lightened and balanced there is hardly any, so the motor will rev really freely. Also with his airbox mods ( or no airbox on the racers) the motor is free to breathe.
