On Sunday I am picking up a R1100GS I bought for not much money. It's 300 miles away (reddich) so I'll be getting a lift down and riding back to Scotland. It's got a new MOT but the guy had only had it a month and doesn't know when it was last serviced.

I'm completely new to these bikes (I have an airhead) and would appreciate any pointers on things I should absolutely check before starting the 300 mile ride home. Thinking check there's oil in the FD, gearbox and engine for starters but would rather know what essentials to stick in a tool roll and if there's anything I'm likely to overlook.

I will of course carry out a full service once I'm home and can source parts. bit short notice to take them with me though to do at roadside.

Cheers
Gordon

You could carry out the oil service before leaving ?
Tyre pressures
Engine oil/filter
FD oil
Gearbox oil
Washers and a few tools
Old washing up bowl, a feel of wheel bearings, check brake pads , lights etc

Take it with you and dump the old stuff at the local tip in the containers.

that's an option cap'n but I've literally zero time to source bits as I'm at work until the night before I set off. I'll see if eurocarparts has the filter & oils and try and nip out to pick up on sat morning.

The good thing about draining oil is it tells a story . ;)

3.5 litres 20/50 mineral
1,25 litres 80/90 gear oil ( GL5 important )
Five washers and a few tools. ( check which online )
Pump and tyre gauge.

excellent ECP have the oils. no filter though.

When are you picking it up ( oh Sunday ) ring " motorworks " google. They maybe able to special you one for Saturday am if yiu ring tmrw morning.

If not just do oil change minus the filter buy cheap 20/50 then another change with the filter when you get home.

I'll check the levels, top up if low and service once I'm home.
Engine oil when hot after a couple of mins on the main stand, fill up towards top of the site glass lower left engine case.

If it fecks up blame Tim . :D

I'm sure it'll be fine

I emptied a Land Rover diff out on my head once. in my eyes, ears, nose. it was all I could smell for a week and SWMBO wasn't keen at all (well, not just for the usual reasons anyway)
