Warranty on my '57 plate 1200 GSA expires on the 12th September and I am not planing to extend it. I'm sure there was a thread similar to this before, but I'm damned if I can ever find anything using the search! (If you know where it is, please feel free to supply a link to it and berate me appropriately!)

I'm going to check the bike over before the warranty runs out and get anything fixed that needs it. Currently there's some corrosion inside the filler cap (which has been there since a couple of months old) which I'll get sorted.

So far, things I'm checking for are:
  • Corrosion behind engine cover (not checked yet, doesn't look like there's any)
  • Corrosion inside fuel filler cap
  • Battery (already replaced under warranty once, not been a problem since)
  • EWS (replaced with new version under warranty already, but was never a problem)
  • FPC (Bike's always been outside, in all weathers and to the top of a Moroccan mountain and back and doesn't seem to have suffered so far)

What else should I be looking for?

David.

Looks like your trying to find problems, but there have not been any so far,so stop worrying and just get out and ride it .

Final drive:

axle bearings - see if the wheel has any play in it
pinion bearings - drop the final drive as per oil change and see if there's any lateral play on the input shaft

Get underneath with a big magnifying glass and look for any signs of oil leaks no matter how small. Preferably steam her off first.

TBH I would extend the warranty.£30 month inc breakdown cover.I have had my monies worth.

Frame crack!

Look at frame behind gearbox on the right hand side of bike (near right foot peg). The frame on mine cracked here and was replaced under the extended warranty.

Also check for oil leaks at back of engine as this can (and did on mine) mean oil was leaking on the clutch (another warranty repair).

You could also check for cracking in the right hand exhaust valve but I doubt you'd see any wear and be able to replace it before it goes (mine went at 20,000 miles).

That's my warranty experience so far.

Trade in price? :thumb

And that's one reason I'm not extending. I've never owned a vehicle that needed an MOT, so I expect this'll be traded in before the year is out... Just waiting for the right one to come up in the for sale section :thumb

Ridden every day. 22,000 miles in 2 years isn't bad considering I've only done the one big trip so far - Just wanting to be a bit diligent and correct any minor niggles (such as the filler cap corrosion) before the warranty runs out.

Cheers guys. I'll have a look at all these but mine's been faultless with final drive and oil usage so far. If the frame was going to crack it would probably have done it whilst spinning down the Spanish motorway at 95mph fully loaded - I think I got a good'n (touches wood).

A kick up the arse?

??? :nenau Must be some context lost there

Plus needing to get it serviced at BMW, which makes a HUGE difference (How much for a service ). I have personal breakdown cover already because of owning more than one bike. I'll be servicing it myself from now on. I have the RepROM and thanks to friends & family all my consumables including oil, filters etc. are free. Worst case scenario - if it really goes bang, I'll cut my losses and buy a new one. That's the risk you take when "self-insuring" - It's worked out very well for me over the years.

Thanks all - any more for any more?
