Hi I am having a go at adjusting the tappets on my 1150 GSA, on reading the instructions, it talks about a tool for extracting the plug cover contained in the tool kit, as I bought the bike minus said tool, where do I get one, or any tips on the best way of doing the job.

Pair of flat bladed screwdrivers....lever it out

Or if you like, a pair of spoon handles

er......are you sure you should be doing that, if you cant get the coil packs out? :comfort

Have I missed something, whats that then.

Unless you're talking about something very different, they are the bits that push onto the spark plus that you need the missing plastic tool to get out.

They look like this:

The barrel part in the middle is actually an HT coil, hence it's called a coil pack.

You can see the lip at the end that you need to lever from both sides at the same time....as above, a pair of flat blade screwdrivers will do it, or you can go to a dealer to get the original tool, which looks like this:

Makes Sense now

Ah, thank you for your explanations, having not even taken a plug out, i was a bit baffled on the terminology used but now fully understand thanks for your help.

I think I was being a bit paranoid about the tool as suggested two flat screw driver blades did the job, I just didn't want to harm my new baby, now I will get on with the tappets, fingers crossed.

Alternator front cover wont come off

I have done my tappets yippee, but had to find tdc by rotating rear wheel as I cant get the alternator cover off, is it necessary to remove front shock absorber, not mentioned in manuals?

There is a mark on your ring gear which indicates TDC and is visible through a hole, covered by a bung, on the right hand side crank case cover. It should be covered in your manual, if you now have it. You do not have to remove the Alternator Cover. :thumb2

You can also do a search within this forum for further help or check The Font Of All Wisdom.

I'll help you later, after my test ride, if you need it. :)

Yes found the TDC okay thanks by removing bung, what a b****** to get the bung back, must be a better replacement somewhere.

Find TDC by removing the black plastic cover on the back of the head, held with two bolts.

Rotate the engine until the two lines on the cam gear are horizontal, just make sure your on the right stroke. Inlet valve closed last.

TDC

Right okay thanks job done now but will try that method next time cheers

No need to find TDC. When the exhaust valves sit on the lobes on one side adjust the exhaust valves on the other side. When the inlet valves sit on the on one side adjust the inlet valves on the other side.

If you must use TDC hold a screwdriver through the spark plug hole against the top of the piston and TDC is when the screwdriver is pushed out as far as it will go.

Don't forget to adjust the rocker shaft end float while you're at it.
