Think I have been ripped off!!!!

Without those you're going to be stuck for mapping upgrades to future versions, let alone the European upgrade.

Did your eBay purchase just include the GPS and not a lot else, if so sounds like it could possibly be stolen (the fact the vendor seemed to know not a great deal about it sort of supports that theory). Attempting to register with Garmin or obtain a mapping upgrade could, at the least, result in them refusing to deal with you or worse. Each unit is individually identifiable and if reported stolen to Garmin they will know when you try to upgrade. If it came with the box, instructions, USB lead etc then you should be OK, most thefts are from vehicles and these usually stay at home.

You can use Mapsource to extract the unlock code from the GPS itself using the unlock wizard, although as you don't have the disk installing Mapsource will have to be done this way.

Once you've done that, have the GPS hooked up to your PC using a USB to mini USB cable (most of us have these lying around these days as plenty of cameras, phones etc. come with them).

You may need to install the Garmin USB driver at this stage.

Open Mapsource and select 'Utilities' > 'Unlock Maps' from the menu. Click 'next', leave the first option selected. Click 'next' and then select the second option. Click 'next'. This should extract your unlock code to Mapsource.

Fire up the unlock wizard again and choose to view the installed unlock codes, clicking the title of the mapping product and clicking the properties button should show you the code.

Dunno what you'll be able to do with the code if the Zumo is stolen though :nenau

Thanks Bumpkin, got mapsource on PC but the the Utilities tab does not have unlock maps:nenau

What version of Mapsource? I'm pretty sure that the Unlock Wizard is an integral part of Mapsource rather than a plug-in. I can't find it as a separate download on the Garmin site.

I'm running Mapsource 6.13.7, maybe it's been removed (or moved elsewhere) in later versions. Try looking in the other menus or even in the start menu as I have a listing there also for it to run alone. Failing that, and assuming you don't have the same version as me you can always get 6.13.7 from the index of Perry.

Try pressing Ctrl+U in Mapsource, that's the keyboard shortcut for the Wizard.

Maybe you need some mapping data installed for it to show :nenau

If it's any use, - Garmin just sent me an email with a lifetime Mapping update offer for £99.99. - It gives you European coverage too even if you original product didn't have it. All the Zumos are supported.

NuMaps

Even if your original maps just covered a single region, nüMaps upgrades your device for the whole of Europe so you enjoy a Lifetime of confident navigation. SD card may be required.

Won't apply to the OP unless he can get the mapping, and device, registered in his name with Garmin I'll wager.

The fact that Garmin don't have it listed as stolen is a start though.

It's nicked. The OP's fucked. A lesson to us all. Buy important shit of real companies, buy crap off scum on ebay :thumb2

But only for that unit....and how long do you keep a GPS before updating?
Would have been great for my old quest1 that i still use, but read the small print and think before buying ;)

Only if Garmin have been told it's stolen by the owner...........How many people not in the know bother these days?

The fact the serial number sticker had been removed tells me it's stolen - exactly what happened to a mate of mine when he bought his first GPS, a Quest, off ebay without checking things (or with me) first.

Definitely buyer beware

It not over yet!!!!! When I sent my paypal payment I put 'payment for a Zumo 550' so hoping I have a case...... also will bring up serial number removal etc with paypal hoping it will strengthen my case....

Will keep you up to date.....

Hi Guys,

Well think I am going to have to chalk this one up to experience!!! No seems to be interested that the unit looks like its been stolen......

Got the serial number as the unit has it in its firmware and the Garmin web site can pull it off. Garmin say its not listed on their system and the police say that not on theirs.

Thanks for all the help, hoping I can upgrade to eurpean maps will see when I have registered it with Garmin.

Cheers

Hi mate

Lodge a complaint with Paypal my experience is that they tend to side with the buyer

^^+1

In this case PayPal is - for once - your friend..

Explain your concerns to them, detain the misrepresentation and they will probably recover your payment from the seller...

You can't lose anything at this stage by trying ...
