..............buying an SPIII new.

Can anyone help me work out how much extra I need to budget for incidentals i.e. Mounting bracket, power leads , extra maps or memory cards, etc.

What are the "must haves" and whats it gonna cost me on top of the unit price,

Anyone ?

Ian

A lockable handlebar touratech mount will cost about £66 and is a nice bit of kit.
A good idea is not to use it on the bike with batteries in it so a power lead from the bike battery is a good thing. Try e-bay or search this site for cheaper alternatives/wiring.

Only things I bought as extras are the (lockable) bar mount & power lead to run of bike battery.
Thats all thats needed, I think!

The Touratech non-lockable mount is, I believe, about £20 cheaper and, since I never leave the GPS on my bike (unless it's in my sight) when parked, saves you enough for a power lead.

The lockable mount only locks the GPS to the mount - the bolts which hold the mount to the bike and which are readily accessible, are the same for both mounts. Whichever you choose to fit, I'd advise you to use the thumbscrew supplied with the plastic car mount to securely attach the unit to the mount, if you're going to travel over any rough ground - belt & braces, but worthwhile.

I was talking to big Dave at Rainbow today about lockable mounts and he thinks they`re not worth having.
He ordered one for the shop and it took him about 3 seconds to get past the lock and remove the unit.

I`d heard rumours but it`s not until you talk to someone whos had one that you can make an informed judgement

I'm sure that the Touratech locking mount offers little real protection over the standard mount, but I would find it more useful at filling stations and I think that it would help with any insurance claim.

but if you leave the batterys in when you switch off the ign the powersupply cuts off and the batterys take over it saves the button pressing b4 you start riding again..

Wire it directly to the battery via an in-line fuse.
Leaving the batteries in can lead to short circuits especially if you use NiMh batteries, several reports of internal "fires" see reports at alt.satellite.gps.

Ok . I have definately got the power thing sussed now. Wire the unit up to the battery direct and dont use internal batteries at all.

But lockable mount or not lockable mount? Suppose it cant hurt to spend the extra £20+.

I use a RAM mount and have adapted the leads that are supplied with the "Deluxe" kit to power from the accessory socket.
No need for a lockable mount. If you're that paranoid about it getting nicked you won't ever use it! With the RAM mount you can simply unscrew it from the bike and take it with you.

A very useful mounting system and a little cheaper than Touratech. Link here at Cycle Gadgets

I use one on my GPS V

I prefer to leave internal batteries in it when connected to the bikes 12v as well.
Gives you a choice when you turn the key off. No problems in 21 months.

PS
I was advised to leave the retaining screw out of the bracket (by CycoActive, Seattle) so the unit 'floats' and vibes have less effect. No problems with viewing it or anything else to date.

PPS
I get my cables at mates rates from GPSoz as I sometimes help him with courses. No, I can't get any for you :P

RAM mount

I was advised from a member on here to get a ram mount and it is great, very versatile and quick to remove if required
